The return of Rodolfo Arruabarrena to Boca not only marks the beginning of a new cycle but also the moment to evaluate all aspects related to the squad, including the players returning from their loans. One of those in this group is Mauricio Benítez.
The 22-year-old midfielder will finish his loan at Royal Antwerp in Belgium and, due to the lack of progress on a permanent transfer, will return to train with the Xeneize in Ezeiza and will be observed by the new coaching staff during preseason while his future is defined.
Benítez left Boca at the beginning of 2025 in search of continuity. After losing prominence in the professional squad, he found in European football the opportunity to gain minutes and establish himself in the First Division. During his stay in Belgium, he managed to earn a place in the team and accumulated a significant number of matches, despite some physical discomfort he experienced during the season.
Benítez had little playing time in his debut at Boca
Trained in the club's youth divisions, the midfielder had his first opportunities in the top category under the management of Diego Martínez. His debut took place in 2024 and, although he left a good impression due to his technical skills, internal competition reduced his space until it led to his departure abroad.
In total, he played 11 official matches wearing the Boca jersey before emigrating to Royal Antwerp. Now, with more experience and playing time, he will try to convince Arruabarrena that he can have a place in the squad for the second half of the year.
The final decision will depend on the evaluation made by the coach in the coming weeks. If he does not fit into Vasco's plans, the club from the Ribera may seek a new loan or consider a permanent transfer. In the meantime, Benítez will have a new opportunity to showcase himself and fight for a place in the club that trained him.
Benítez's numbers at Royal Antwerp
Since his arrival at the Belgian team in early last year, the native of Florencio Varela has played 2,288 minutes, spread over 41 matches, in which he scored 3 goals, provided 1 assist, and received 6 yellow cards.
