The trial of Diddy Combs for sex trafficking began with jokes from the judge.

The process began in Manhattan with nods to 'The Lord of the Rings' and comparisons to the Ghislaine Maxwell case

The federal trial against Sean "Diddy" Combs  for racketeering and sex trafficking began with an unexpectedly light tone. Judge Arun Subramanian,  in charge of the proceedings,  broke the ice with jokes about the accused's multiple nicknames and compared the length of the jury questionnaire to the famous "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

In the courtroom, Subramaniancommented on the size of the list of potential jurors, anticipating a prolonged and complex selection process. The prosecution and defense faced numerous challenges in forming the jury, a task that was expected to take several days.

An unusual start for a high-profile federal trial

Diddy appeared at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan federal courthouse in Lower Manhattan, dressed in formal attire, reading glasses, a sweater, and a well-groomed gray beard.  The judge had previously authorized him to appear in civilian clothing, allowing him to choose from a limited list of garments, instead of the prison uniform.

Five charges and a media defense

Combs faced five charges in total. He was originally charged with three:  sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion; transportation for prostitution; and conspiracy to commit racketeering. In April 2025, two new charges were added:  another for sex trafficking and an additional one for transportation for prostitution.

The judge reminded that the artist, also legally known as "Love" since 2018, pleaded not guilty and keeps the presumption of innocence.

During the first hearing,  Subramanian also addressed privacy issues that could arise during testimonies, anticipating that these topics would be discussed in parallel to protect those involved. Additionally, he projected that the trial would extend for about eight weeks.

Diddy appeared supported by a team of eight lawyers, whose final composition had been confirmed the previous week.

In another striking moment,  the judge mentioned the case of Ghislaine Maxwell, the ex-partner of convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, alluding to similarities with the accusations Diddy faces. Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence in Florida, convicted of sex crimes linked to a trafficking network.
