Discord announced a series of changes to its safety policies. Starting in early March, the platform will enable by default an experience designed for teenagers on all accounts.
The measure comes in a sensitive context, after reports about an alleged data leak linked to age verification processes. Although the company denied the most serious figures, it confirmed that there were potentially affected users.

What changes with the new teen mode
With this update, Discord will start offering an experience "suitable for minors" by default. This implies more filters, interaction limits, and access restrictions.
Users who want to modify those parameters or enter spaces with sensitive content will have to complete an age verification process.

Among the most important changes, the platform will include content filters, blocking of age-restricted spaces, and limits on direct messages. There will also be stricter controls on friend requests, incoming messages, and participation in public stages.

What age verification will be like
The platform will offer two main methods to verify the user's age. One will be through facial estimation and the other through sending an identity document. In addition, Discord will use an age inference model that runs in the background to detect whether an account belongs to an adult.

According to the company, the selfies used for facial estimation are processed directly on the device and aren't sent to external servers.

The documents that are sent are deleted quickly after confirming the age. In most cases, the procedure is done only once.
New default safety settings
The changes will apply to both new and existing users. The system will automatically adjust the experience according to the verified age group.
