Violence in Mexico has claimed a new victim: Teresa González Murillo, known as "Teresita," leader of the collective Luz de Esperanza Desaparecidos Jalisco.

An announced and unattended attack
On March 27, 2025, Teresa was brutally attacked in her home in the San Marcos neighborhood, Guadalajara.
Three armed men broke into her home intending to kidnap her. When she resisted, they shot her in the face, leaving her gravely injured.
After days of struggle at the IMSS Western Medical Center, Teresa passed away on April 2.

This attack was not an isolated incident. Teresa had received previous threats due to her work in the search for her brother Jaime, missing since September 2024.
Additionally, her teenage daughter was assaulted days before the attack. These warning signs were ignored by the authorities.
The official response: evasions and negligence
The Jalisco Prosecutor's Office, instead of acknowledging the severity of the attack and the possible implications related to her search work, suggested that the motive might have been a robbery. It argued that Teresa possessed a considerable sum of money.

This statement minimizes the previous threats and diverts attention from the real issue: the persecution and murder of activists in the country.
A pattern of violence against searchers
Teresa's case is not unique. In states like Guanajuato and Veracruz, other searchers have been murdered or have faced constant threats.
The lack of protection and prevailing impunity send a clear message: in Mexico, seeking justice is a death sentence.
Teresa González Murillo's death is yet another example of the federal government's failure to protect its most vulnerable citizens.
Inaction and indifference have turned Mexico into a country where justice is inaccessible and where those who seek it risk their lives.
