Donald Trump and Putin spoke by phone and moved toward peace in Ukraine

They agreed that the first steps toward peace will begin with a ceasefire focused on energy infrastructure

In an important diplomatic exchange, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, held a phone conversation today with Russian President Vladimir Putin, marking a crucial moment in efforts to end the war in Ukraine and pave the way for a more stable international order.

During the conversation, which lasted almost 3 hours, both leaders focused on the urgent need for peace and a ceasefire in Ukraine, emphasizing that the time has come to end this devastating conflict and work toward a lasting peace that benefits not only Ukraine and Russia but also the international community at large.

One of the central topics of the conversation was the recognition that the war in Ukraine should never have started and that the resources invested by both Ukraine and Russia, both in human lives and national wealth, would have been much better used to address the needs of their own peoples.

The leaders expressed their shared opinion that this conflict has caused immense suffering and that the priority moving forward must be to stop the bloodshed and destruction.

A ceasefire agreement

According to the White House, President Trump and President Putin agreed that the first steps toward peace would begin with a 30-day ceasefire focused on energy and infrastructure, critical sectors that have been severely affected in Ukraine by Russian attacks.

Additionally, both leaders addressed the need for technical negotiations for the implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, an essential step to ensure the security of international maritime routes and regional stability.

The conversation also debated the idea of a total ceasefire and a permanent peace, with the immediate start of negotiations in the Middle East as part of diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine and prevent further escalation.

The situation in the Middle East

While the Ukraine conflict remained the main topic, the leaders also addressed broader regional issues, particularly the Middle East, which both considered a key area for potential cooperation toward peace and stability.

The conversation addressed the importance of preventing future conflicts in the region and the need to curb the proliferation of strategic weapons.

The White House also communicated that both leaders expressed their joint commitment to collaborate with other world powers to ensure the widest possible application of non-proliferation efforts, recognizing that global security depends on all nations working together to prevent the spread of dangerous technologies.

A particularly notable point of agreement between both leaders was their shared stance on Iran. Both President Trump and President Putin reiterated that Iran must never be allowed to achieve the capability to destroy Israel, emphasizing the need for constant vigilance to address the threat posed by Iran's nuclear program.

The call also highlighted the potential for a future in which relations between the United States and Russia significantly improve once peace is achieved in Ukraine, offering important economic agreements and greater geopolitical stability.
