Donald Trump had a great meeting with Italian Giorgia Meloni at the White House

The President of the United States received the Italian Prime Minister this Thursday, where they discussed trade and defense

President Donald Trump received Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the White House this Thursday in a meeting marked by optimism regarding the possibility of reaching a trade agreement between the United States and the European Union.

Meloni became the first European leader to meet with Trump since he announced last week the 90-day pause of his tariff initiative known as "Liberation Day."

During their meeting in the Cabinet Room, Meloni, 48 years old, expressed her intention to collaborate to pave the way for an agreement between Washington and Brussels. "I'm sure we can reach an agreement and I'm here to help with that," declared the Italian leader, who was dressed in white.

However, she clarified that she can't commit on behalf of the European Union, as Italy doesn't have the authority to unilaterally negotiate trade agreements on behalf of the bloc.

Meloni proposed that Trump make an official visit to Italy, where the possibility of a meeting with representatives of the entire EU could be explored. Meanwhile, Trump, 78 years old, was emphatic in his conviction that an understanding will be reached. "There will be a trade agreement, 100%, but it will be a fair agreement," he assured.

The White House considers Meloni a key figure to facilitate rapprochement with the European Union. A senior administration official stated that Trump seeks to open the Italian market more to American products, while seeing Meloni as a "valuable interlocutor" to establish links with the rest of the European bloc.

Trump and Meloni had already met briefly last December, on the sidelines of the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, but this is their first formal meeting to discuss bilateral policies.

In addition to trade, the leaders addressed other topics of common interest, such as defense cooperation, the reconstruction of Ukraine after the war with Russia, and collaboration in strategic technologies like artificial intelligence and space.

Trump also expressed his intention that European countries increase their defense spending, a recurring demand in his foreign policy.

Meloni replied to this concern by assuring that Europe is committed to doing more and is working on tools that allow NATO member states to increase their defense investment. "We are convinced that we all must do more," she stated.

Another key point on the agenda was the boost to U.S. energy exports. Administration officials revealed that Trump will propose to Italy the possibility of importing more energy from the United States, as part of his goal to make the country a global energy leader.

"President Trump wants to unleash the energy potential of the United States to export it to the rest of the world," indicated a presidential advisor. "Italy is interested in participating in that effort."

Meloni's visit reinforces her role as a close ally of the Trump administration in Europe. Her pragmatic profile and willingness to dialogue position her as a strategic figure to facilitate conversations between the United States and the European Union, especially at a time when there is a search to redefine trade relations and strengthen transatlantic cooperation on key issues.
