The qualification of Spain to the final of the 2026 World Cup sparked euphoria among its supporters and also left statements that generated a stir. One of the most resonant was from Spanish journalist Eduardo Aguirre, known for his fanaticism for Cristiano Ronaldo and his recurring criticisms of Lionel Messi, who, after the victory 2-0 over France, stated that he would prefer to face the Argentinian National Team rather than England in the tournament's final.

During the program El Chiringuito, the communicator praised the performance of the Spanish team and maintained that the level shown in the semifinals makes them the main candidate for the title. "Playing like this, no one can catch us. Impossible", he asserted. Aguirre even described the performance of La Roja against the French as "the biggest thrashing in the last twenty years" in a World Cup and emphasized that it was against "the best team in the World Cup, which was France".

However, his most controversial statements came when referring to Spain's possible opponent in the final. "I want Argentina to reach the final simply because I want Spain to win the World Cup and I think it's easier to beat Argentina than England", he claimed.

The journalist also doubted that the team of Lionel Scaloni would manage to overcome the English in the semifinals. "I believe Argentina won't win tomorrow, because England is a very good team", he concluded. In the same vein, he downplayed the path taken by the Albiceleste during the tournament. "Imagine what we would do against a team that almost needed to go to extra time with Cape Verde, Egypt, and Switzerland, with controversial refereeing", he stated.

This is not the first time Aguirre has targeted the Argentinian National Team during this World Cup. In previous interventions, he had questioned the refereeing received by Scaloni's team and even claimed that "everything points to Argentina reaching the final". Additionally, after the match against Egypt, he stated: "I think it all started with a clear red card to Messi in the first match that VAR didn't review and Messi wasn't sent off".

The Spanish journalist's statements came while Argentina and England awaited to play the other semifinal of the World Cup, scheduled for this Wednesday, July 15 at 16:00 (Argentinian time) at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, a match that will determine Spain's opponent in next Sunday's final.
