Buenos Aires Province will hold its local elections on September 7, 2025, in an electoral round separate from the national calendar. The province formalized this measure through Decree No. 639/2025, published in the Official Gazette.

The separation of the elections allows for avoiding logistical and operational problems if the provincial elections were to coincide with the national ones, as established by Law No. 5,109 and the Buenos Aires Constitution.

Buenos Aires 2025 electoral ban: what's prohibited

The electoral ban in Buenos Aires begins on Saturday, September 6 at 8:00 p.m. and extends until three hours after voting ends. During this period, the National Electoral Law imposes key restrictions:

  • Electoral campaigning prohibited: campaign events, opening party offices, and distributing ballots are not allowed.
  • Electoral advertising restricted: the dissemination of advertising or social media posts promoting candidates is prohibited.
  • Publication of polls suspended: pre-election poll results can't be published until 10:00 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Sale and consumption of alcohol: restricted from 8:00 p.m. on Saturday in stores, bars, restaurants, and public or private events.
  • Carrying weapons prohibited: no citizen may carry weapons during the electoral ban.
  • Suspension of events: popular shows, sports events, theater performances, or parties not related to the electoral process are prohibited.

Fines and penalties for violating the electoral ban

Failure to comply with the electoral ban in Buenos Aires 2025 may result in financial fines and prison sentences, depending on the infraction:

Those who induce voting or promote absenteeism face two months to two years in prison.

Violation of the secrecy of the vote may result in up to three years in prison.

Publications or campaign activities outside the permitted hours may be penalized with fines from $10,000 to $100,000.

Candidates who do not respect the ban may lose subsidies, contributions, and public funding for one to four years, including funds for future elections.

Complying with these rules ensures a safe, transparent, and reliable electoral process.

What will be voted on in Buenos Aires on September 7

In these local elections, Buenos Aires residents will renew provincial deputies and senators, as well as municipal representatives:

  • 23 regular provincial senators and 15 alternates.
  • 46 regular provincial deputies and 28 alternates.
  • Councilors and advisors in the various municipalities.

The voting system will be the party ballot, widely known by the electorate. Meanwhile, in the national elections on October 26, the Single Paper Ballot (BUP) approved by Congress will be used.

Complying with the 2025 electoral ban is mandatory to ensure transparency and avoid penalties, guaranteeing that all citizens can participate in a safe and orderly process.
