Environmentalists are demanding action from the Córdoba government regarding land that belongs to the Nation and could end up in the hands of the province.

Specifically, the Córdoba Environmental Forum submitted a letter to Governor Martín Llaryora requesting information "regarding media reports indicating that the Province could receive land from the La Calera Defense Reserve, which belongs to the Nation, as a form of payment for the pension debt owed by the Nation."

The NGO also refers to reports mentioning that "this land could be targeted for potential real estate development," pointing out that this possibility "has triggered strong warnings among social and environmental organizations in the region and the province."

The Córdoba Environmental Forum noted that the La Calera Defense Nature Reserve covers more than 11,000 hectares (27,181 acres) recognized by the National Parks Administration as one of the largest areas of continuous native forest in Greater Córdoba.

"At the Forum, we have expressed concern about the possible removal of its reserve status to allow for real estate projects, which poses a real risk to a significant portion of native forest preservation, watercourse regulation, and equitable community access to a healthy environment," they stated.

The submission recalls that access to environmental information "is a right recognized by the National and Provincial Constitutions, as well as by specific laws such as the General Environmental Law (25,675), the Law on Free Access to Environmental Information (25,831), and the Provincial Environmental Policy Law (10,208)."

Within this framework, it requested that the provincial government clarify whether it is negotiating with the Nation for the transfer of these lands and, if so, for what purpose.

Environmentalists demand answers

The Forum urged the provincial government to respond "within the timeframes established by law" and emphasized "the need for maximum transparency in this process, setting aside the short-term interests to which citizens have become accustomed and prioritizing the protection of Córdoba's natural heritage and the rights of future generations."

The fields of this nature reserve are owned by the Army and are located between the city of Córdoba, the highway to Carlos Paz, the San Roque dam, and the city of La Calera.

More than a decade ago, they were designated as a "Defense" nature reserve due to their status as military land.

This "reserve" designation prevents the Nation from using it for industrial or real estate purposes.
