The Laver Cup is once again in the hands of Europe. At the O2 Arena in London, a venue that for years hosted the ATP Finals, the team from the Old Continent defeated the World Team 13-5 and reclaimed the trophy that had been lost in San Francisco in 2025.
The conclusion came before the end of the Sunday session. Europe started the final day with a lead of 7-5 and had two paths to reach the necessary 13 points. The first came in doubles, where Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik defeated Alex de Miñaur and Taylor Fritz 7-5 and 6-3 to extend the lead to 10-5.
With the championship just one win away, Alexander Zverevtook the responsibility to close the series. The German, ranked number 2 in the world and the newly crowned US Open champion, defeated Learner Tien 7-6 (7-3) and 6-3 and secured the final three points for Europe. As a result, the remaining matches were no longer necessary.
The victory marked the sixth European conquest in the nine editions of the event, which pits representatives from Europe against players from the rest of the world. The tournament does not award ATP ranking points, although it does distribute significant monetary prizes. In this edition, the six members of the winning team shared a purse of1,500,000 dollars.
Zverev, one of the key players in the victory, highlighted the special value of winning in London and explained: "I hadn't won a match here in the two years I played, so I'm happy to have done it today. A huge shoutout to the entire Rest of the World team. They pushed us to the limit once again. They were champions last year. Now we had great team chemistry and I'm very happy to have won".
How the rest of the tournament went
The conclusion was the result of a weekend in which both teams alternated favorable moments. Europe ended Friday with a lead of 3-1, when each victory awarded one point. On Saturday, with matches worth two units, the World Team reacted thanks to victories by Tien over Cobolli and De Miñaur against Zverev.
However, the European response came immediately. Carlos Alcaraz defeated Fritz after saving two match points in a match that ended 6-3, 4-6 and 13-11, while Casper Ruud and Zverev won in doubles against Alexander Bublik and Brandon Nakashima 6-4 and 7-6 (7). This way, Yannick Noah's team entered Sunday with a two-point lead that ultimately proved decisive.
For South American tennis, the edition featured Francisco Cerúndolo as a representative. The Argentine was part of the World Team and only played the opening match of the tournament against Ruud. After winning the first set in a tie-break, the porteño lost 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 and 10-8 in the decisive tiebreak. Agassi, captain of the World Team, did not use the Argentine again for the rest of the competition.
Francisco Cerúndolo was the only South American representative
The next edition already has a confirmed venue. The Laver Cup 2027 will take place from September 24 to 26 at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, in Los Angeles, a city that is also preparing to host the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
