The CGT strike failed: businesses open and reduced impact across the country

Thanks to the buses working, many workers were able to attend their jobs

Since midnight on Thursday, the general strike called by the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) began, which will last for 24 hours and has the support of both Argentine Workers' Centers (CTA).

The strike, the third nationwide since Javier Milei assumed the presidency, aims to destabilize the Government. However, the impact on daily life was minimal, especially in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA) and in the interior of the country.

Unlike previous strikes, on this day schools remained open, businesses operated normally, and public transportation, although with some delays, was operational in much of the national territory. This operation, especially of buses, allowed many workers to attend their jobs.

In suburban areas of Buenos Aires like Merlo, however, the situation was more complex. The long lines to take the bus caused discomfort among users, as a passenger told TN: "It's a mess, I lose the attendance bonus which is 80 grand."

The worker, who usually uses the train, had to resort to the bus to get to his job at a laundromat located in CABA. When thinking about the return, he admitted his uncertainty: "I don't know what I'm going to do," and anticipated that he might need to request a voucher at his job to pay for an alternative transportation service.

From the National Security Ministry, they reported that almost 1000 complaints had already been received through Line 134, the channel set up by Milei's Government to alert about acts of violence or suspicious situations. Of those complaints, a large part were related to threats from unions toward workers to enforce the strike.

Considering the total calls from noon on Wednesday until 10 a.m. on Thursday, 584 calls were recorded, 46 for order issues and 7 for mobilizations. Since the creation of this service in December 2023, more than 268,000 complaints have already been received.

Although sectors like flights, banks, and waste collection were more affected, in general terms the strike had minimal reach. The citizen response showed that, despite the union call, a large part of the population chose to maintain their work and educational routine.
