Pierre Gasly went from celebrating one of the best results of his career in Formula 1 to missing out on the podium in a matter of minutes. The teammate of Franco Colapinto at Alpine had crossed the finish line in third place at the Monaco Grand Prix after coming back from ninth on the grid, but two five-second penalties for exceeding the speed limit in the pit lane dropped him to seventh place in the final classification.
After the race, the French team publicly expressed its disagreement with the stewards' decision and announced through a statement shared on its social media that it would request the Right of Review, a regulatory mechanism that allows reopening a case that has already been resolved as long as new and relevant evidence that was not available at the time of the original decision is provided in an attempt to overturn the penalties.
Days later, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) officially confirmed that it will review the appeal submitted by the French team in a hearing scheduled for this Thursday.
The hearing will take place virtually and will be divided into two stages. In the first, Alpine must demonstrate the existence of that "significant and relevant new element", as established by Article 14 of the FIA's International Sporting Code. Only if it meets that requirement will the stewards reconsider the penalties imposed on the French driver.
