The Millionaire received a financial sanction due to incidents involving the fans and could face a partial closure of the Monumental if the payment is not made
FIFA sanctioned River with a financial penalty for various incidents that occurred during the matches the team played in the group stage of the 2025 Club World Cup against Urawa Red Diamonds, Monterrey, and Inter Milan.
According to the Disciplinary Committee, the penalty is due to discriminatory behavior by a section of the fans, who sang chants containing homophobic and racist expressions during all three matches. Among the examples cited in the statement are insults such as "p***" and "mono," as well as shouts directed at Esteban Andrada, Monterrey's goalkeeper with a past at Boca.
FIFA sancionó a River por cánticos discriminatorios
The organization warned that the amount, around 88 thousand dollars, must be paid within a maximum period of three months. If this is not fulfilled, Estadio Monumental will face a partial closure of 25% of its capacity for the next official match that River plays as the home team.
Additionally, FIFA imposed an extra fine of 8 thousand dollars for other behaviors considered serious, such as throwing objects, using pyrotechnics, and displaying an unauthorized flag.
The disciplinary report also included unusual details, such as a person entering with attire not permitted by the regulations and the activation of an alarm in a restricted area due to the lighting of a cigarette.
The sanction adds to a series of previous warnings from FIFA to clubs and federations for discriminatory acts, as part of a zero-tolerance policy regarding alleged hate speech in stadiums.
