The international body would have informed the AUF that it will have to remove the 1924 and 1928 Olympic titles for the 2026 World Cup

The debate over the four stars that the Uruguay National Team displays on its crest has reignited; however, everything seems to indicate that a resolution is near.
Everything began a few days ago, when Luis Suárez publicly stated that, for him, La Celeste only has two World Cup titles (1930 and 1950) and that he doesn't consider the Olympic victories of 1924 and 1928 as World Cups. His statements reignited the historical discussion and, according to Víctor Hugo Morales, were the trigger for a FIFA decision.
The commentator claimed that the organization led by Gianni Infantino has already informed the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) that the national team must appear at the 2026 World Cup with only two stars on its jersey. "FIFA has decided that Uruguay will use 2 stars on the crest," he posted on his X account.
El posteo de Víctor Hugo Morales
"FIFA has ruled that Uruguay must display only 2 stars, corresponding to the World Cup titles won, even though historically the country displayed 4 stars, including the gold medals from 1924 and 1928," he added.
According to Morales, Suárez's comment not only revived the debate, but ultimately placed the issue on the international agenda, contributing to the world football governing body definitively resolving the matter.
Although there is still no official confirmation that the change will actually take place, Uruguay's invented stars are once again at the center of attention and could, or could not, disappear for the next World Cup.
What Suárez had said
Previously, El Pistolero reignited the eternal controversy over the stars with a comment that caught all Uruguayan fans off guard. "We have two and we were given two more, but I don't count them," he said in a conversation with Juan De Montreal on TikTok. "Argentina has more World Cups than Uruguay," he added.
