Finland summoned the Russian ambassador in Helsinki on Thursday to demand explanations for a potential violation of its airspace by a Russian military aircraft, an incident that reportedly occurred while the aircraft was trying to avoid a thunderstorm over the Gulf of Finland, according to Finnish authorities.

The Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the diplomatic summons through a statement posted on social media X, where it noted that the government requested formal clarifications from Moscow regarding the episode recorded on Wednesday near the Porkkala peninsula, west of the Finnish capital.

''The Finnish Foreign Ministry has summoned the Russian ambassador today and requested an explanation regarding a suspicion of airspace violation,'' the ministry indicated in its official message.

According to the Finnish Ministry of Defense, the incident involved a Russian military aircraft that allegedly entered Finnish airspace while maneuvering to evade adverse weather conditions, particularly thunderstorms affecting the Baltic Sea region.

Although the authorities did not specify the type of aircraft involved or the exact time it allegedly remained within Finnish airspace, they indicated that the situation was quickly detected by the country's air surveillance systems.

In response to the episode, the Finnish Air Force deployed an ''operational flight'' to monitor the situation and track the movements of the Russian aircraft. The government avoided providing tactical details about the operation, although it emphasized that security protocols were activated immediately after the possible incursion was detected.

The Finnish Minister of Defense, Antti Hakkanen, confirmed that the authorities initiated an investigation as soon as the incident was reported. ''The investigation into the suspicion of airspace violation was initiated immediately,'' the official stated in a statement released by the ministry.

The Finnish Minister of Defense assured that an investigation process has begun and more details will be provided as it progresses.

The Finnish Border Guard is in charge of the investigations and must determine precisely whether the Russian aircraft actually crossed the air border, how long it remained in Finnish airspace, and what the exact circumstances of the episode were.

The case occurs in a context of rising tension between Russia and the northern European countries since the beginning of the war in Ukraine and Finland's subsequent accession to NATO in 2023. Since then, Helsinki has significantly strengthened its military surveillance and defensive capabilities on the eastern border and in the Baltic Sea.

Finnish authorities have reported several times on movements of Russian aircraft and vessels near their borders, although most of those episodes did not result in major diplomatic consequences. However, each incident now carries greater sensitivity due to the deterioration of relations between Moscow and the member countries of the Atlantic alliance.

The incident occurred in the strategic Porkkala Peninsula.
The incident occurred in the strategic Porkkala Peninsula.

The Porkkala peninsula, where the alleged incursion occurred, is considered a strategic area due to its proximity to Helsinki and its location over important maritime routes of the Gulf of Finland. During the Cold War, the area had military relevance due to the Soviet presence in the region.

So far, the Russian government has not issued official comments on the Finnish accusations nor publicly responded to the summons of its ambassador. It has also not been confirmed whether the alleged entry into airspace was accidental or solely related to adverse weather conditions.

Finnish authorities indicated that they will provide more details once the investigation led by the Border Guard progresses and all information about the trajectory of the Russian aircraft is collected.

The Putin government has not issued official comments regarding the incidents reported by the Finnish government.
