The Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro directly blamed Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for the diplomatic crisis with Argentina and accused the leftist leader of isolating Brazil through an “ideologized and confrontational” foreign policy. He also promised to rebuild the relationship with the government of Javier Milei if he reaches the presidency in 2027.

“I strongly condemn the Lula government's decision to downgrade diplomatic relations with Argentina, a sister nation, our largest trading partner in South America, and a historical friend of the Brazilian people,” expressed the senator and candidate of the Liberal Party.

The reaction came after Lula's regime decided to reduce Brazilian diplomatic representation in Buenos Aires to the level of chargé d'affaires and postponed indefinitely the return of Ambassador Julio Bitelli. Bolsonaro stated that the break “was not inevitable” and attributed the escalation to a foreign policy that, he claimed, managed to create conflicts with Argentina, the United States, and Paraguay in just a few months.

“No government in recent history has managed to isolate Brazil so much in such a short time,” he declared. He also questioned the use of the so-called defense of Brazilian sovereignty as an argument to justify the confrontations promoted by Lula. In his view, the official rhetoric has become an “electoral propaganda” tool.

“Sovereignty and the prestige of Brazil are not protected by electoral boasts and diplomatic breaks,” he maintained. Bolsonaro also emphasized that the escalation was “unilateral” and recalled that the Argentine government has already stated that it will not respond with institutional reprisals.

This observation coincides with the position expressed by the Argentine Foreign Ministry, which lamented that Lula's government continues to “isolate itself from the region for ideological reasons” and reaffirmed that national foreign policy will continue to be determined by the defense of Argentine interests.

Flávio Bolsonaro also linked the behavior of the Brazilian president to the regional setback of governments and movements associated with the São Paulo Forum, historically promoted by the Workers' Party.

He stated that Lula sees his political allies weakening and responds by confronting countries that have taken a different ideological path. He also warned that the economic consequences of the crisis will not fall on the leaders who caused it, but on Brazilian farmers, industrialists, exporters, and workers.

Finally, the candidate left a direct message for Argentina and Milei: “This crisis is not between our nations; it is the work of a government in its final days”. He promised that if he assumes the presidency in 2027, he will seek to restore ties with Argentina, Paraguay, the United States, and other nations in the region.
