A study reveals how much Fortnite players spend and why the free-to-play model is so profitable

Fortnite is free to play, but not for Epic Games. Behind the free-to-play model there is a monetization system that turned the game into one of the biggest revenue machines in the industry.
A recent study makes it possible to put concrete numbers on that question:how much money does each user generate? The answer explains why the title remains an absolute priority for Epic.

How much a Fortnite player really spends
The analysis comes from a report published by LendEDU, which surveyed 1,000 regular players of the battle royale. Although it doesn't represent the entire global base, it serves as a solid reference.
According to the study, about 70% of users (68.8%) have spent real money in the game at some point.
The average spending that explains the phenomenon
Among those who pay, average spending amounts to 84.67 dollars. If the entire sample is taken, including those who have never spent a cent, the average stands at 49.87 dollars per player.

For a game with millions of active users, that number explains daily revenue that has been estimated at one million dollars per day.
The Battle Pass
The report shows that the Battle Pass is the main revenue driver. Of the group that spends money, 79.51% bought the basic 10-dollar pass.

In addition, 45.64% chose the 25-dollar version, which includes levels and cosmetics unlocked immediately.
Skins before competitive advantages
The study confirms that Fortnite doesn't sell power, but aesthetics. 58.9% of spending goes to skins and characters.
Only 9.52% of the money is used to buy emotes, despite their enormous visibility on streams and social networks.

A fact that surprises Epic
Almost 20% of players who spend money do not know that these cosmetics do not grant real advantages in matches. In addition, 36.78% of users paid for the first time within Fortnite, which demonstrates its conversion power.
A model that doesn't depend on everyone
As the LendEDU report itself clarifies, these are averages. There are players who never spend a cent and others who invest very large sums. Fortnite works because it doesn't need everyone to pay: it is enough for a portion to do so consistently.
