The Government announced a major 40% cut in the Human Rights structure.

The Secretariat of Human Rights will be downgraded to the rank of undersecretariat, eliminating Kirchnerist waste

The presidential spokesperson, Manuel Adorni, reported this Wednesday on a significant cut in the areas of Culture and Human Rights, and emphasized that, to date, Javier Milei's administration “eliminated 200 areas, 10 ministries, and 45,000 contracts were terminated.”

During a press conference, Adorni explained that the Secretariat of Human Rights will be downgraded to the rank of undersecretariat. “This way, 40% of the structure and 30% of the personnel are cut; this implies a savings of nine billion pesos annually. The portfolio will now indeed be responsible for guaranteeing all human rights and not defending an ideological partisan sector,” he stated.

The Minister of Justice, Mariano Cúneo Libarona, supported the measure and argued that “the current context demands the analysis and adoption of urgent measures to improve the structure, functioning, and sustainability of the State.” He also indicated that “Since we took office, 405 militant employees have already been dismissed, which represents 44% of the personnel received.”

More changes

Regarding the cultural sector, Adorni anticipated a series of changes in different organizations and institutes, with the purpose of optimizing the use of public resources and reducing administrative expenses.

From Milei's Government, they revealed that a modification will be made to the article that grants autonomy to the National Theater Institute (INT), which will cease to be a decentralized body to depend directly on the State. Despite this change, the current financing scheme will be maintained, and both the Board of Directors and the Provincial Representatives will be eliminated, “resulting in significant savings that will be allocated to the theater.” It was also confirmed that Federico Brunetti will assume as the new national director.

It was also announced that organizations such as the National Museum of Fine Arts, the Palacio Libertad, Tecnópolis, and CONABIP will be unified under a central structure. Meanwhile, the National Institute of Historical Research will be created, which will be responsible for studying all the relevant figures in Argentine history. Within this new entity, the Sanmartiniano Institute and the Evita Institute will be converted into national museums.

On the other hand, it was reported that the Yrigoyeneano Institute and the Rosas Institute will be integrated into the new organization, while others like the Browneano Institute, Newberiano, and Belgraniano will be dissolved, and their functions will be absorbed by the new structure.

From the Government, they explained that these decisions aim to improve the efficiency of the state apparatus and cut administrative expenses, while prioritizing direct investment in cultural programs. They also highlighted that centralization aims to avoid fragmentation in decision-making and ensure a more efficient use of public funds.
