On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, President Daniel Noboa and the Minister of Public Health, Antonio Naranjo, inaugurated the Maternal Intensive Care Unit at the Matilde Hidalgo de Procel Gyneco-Obstetric Hospital, in Guayaquil.
With an investment of USD 3.3 million, the work represents a milestone in maternal health carein Ecuador, aimed at pregnant women who face complications or critical risks.

The President toured the facilities and highlighted the importance of the unit, which includes ten beds distributed in intensive and intermediate care, in addition to the addition of
23 new specialized professionals.
“Our commitment is to ensure decent, high-quality care for all mothers and their children,” said Noboa.

Minister Naranjo mentioned that the new unit will help reduce maternal mortality by avoiding unnecessary transfers to other hospitals
.
He also highlighted that this advance will strengthen key programs such as the ESAMYN (Mother and Child Friendly Health Establishment) and the Kangaroo Program, designed to care for premature newborns.

The hospital manager, Ana Mejía, spoke on behalf of the medical staff: “We are here to provide comprehensive support for any complication in pregnancy, childbirth or the
postpartum period.”
The Matilde Hidalgo de Procel Hospital, recognized as a gyneco-obstetric reference in the Litoral region, now has a maternal intensive care unit that will strengthen health services in Guayaquil and surrounding areas.
