By January 2026, the Government of Javier Milei eliminated a total of 65,582 state jobs since the beginning of his administration, in a measure that seeks to lower public spending, consolidate fiscal balance and make progress in reducing taxes.

The figure was confirmed by the Minister of Deregulation and State Transformation, Federico Sturzenegger, who reported the figure through his official account on the social network X. There, the official directly linked the reduction in public employment to the objective of alleviating the tax burden on citizens and the productive sector.

“How do you lower taxes? Lowering spending! The State had become so oversized that month after month we continued to find spaces to continue to lower the tax burden on the taxpayer. VLLC! ”, said Sturzenegger when announcing the progress of the program to reduce the size of the State

.

The total figure includes cuts at different levels of the national public sector, including centralized administration, decentralized agencies, state companies and also personnel linked to the military and security spheres.

The reduction process has especially accelerated over the past year.

What happened last year

According to data published by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC), between December 2024 and December 2025 the number of employees in the national public sector fell from 301,862 to 280,120 people. This meant a decrease of 21,742 jobs in just

twelve months.

Within the state structure, the national public administration concentrates a significant part of this adjustment. In this segment, the number of workers fell from 196,481 in December 2024 to 190,936 in December 2025, representing a reduction of 5,545 jobs, equivalent to a year-on-year drop of

7.1%.

The cutback is particularly marked in centralized administration, which includes ministries and dependencies directly subordinate to the Executive Branch. There, the workforce fell from 43,527 employees to 38,940 in the same period, implying a decrease of 4,587 positions and a negative year-on-year variation of

10.5%.

There are also reductions in decentralized administration, where the workforce fell from 124,171 to 116,222 workers, with a drop of 7,949 jobs and a year-on-year variation of -6.4%.

In the decentralized administration, the number of employees increased from 22,449 to 21,733, representing a reduction of 716 positions and a drop of 6.0%.

The reduction of public employment is a key tool of the Milei Government to build a more efficient State, reduce structural spending and create conditions to alleviate tax pressure.

The national administration believes that the shrinking of the state apparatus is essential to consolidate the fiscal surplus and lay the foundations for sustained economic growth.
