With his continuity already confirmed, Gustavo Alfaro began to shape the future of the Paraguayan National Team. The Argentine coach was present at the Marcelo Bielsa stadium to observe the debut of the Albirroja in the 2026 South American Games in Santa Fe and, after the 2-1 victory over Argentina, explained the reasons behind the decision to extend his contract.

The renewal was announced last Friday, September 11, by Roberto Harrison, president of the Paraguayan Football Association (APF), who confirmed that the coach will continue for the next four years. Subsequently, the former coach of Boca detailed how he navigated the discussions and what factors he considered before accepting the new challenge. "More than anything, it was a matter that one had to try to finish defining what they were going to keep doing. From the very first moment, I told my representative: don't talk to anyone, the answer will be to Paraguay first", he shared in a conversation with DSports Radio.

The coach acknowledged that it was not an automatic decision. "I have lived many things in this profession, like coaching two World Cups. There is a very good relationship with the leaders of Paraguay, but I had to analyze whether I was going to continue being a coach for four more years", he pointed out.

Finally, the evaluation ended with an agreement between the parties. "I feel in pure validity, I just wanted to talk with my family and my environment. If all the factors we wanted came together, we would continue. We reached an agreement and fortunately it happened", Alfaro affirmed.

Thinking about what’s ahead, the Santafesino is already considering how to shape the squad. "We need to work on a partial renewal of the team. That doesn't mean it has to be done quickly, but obviously it needs to be done. And we need to try to exhaust all possible stages so that the team transitions from that hope of returning to a World Cup. We need to be up to the challenges", he explained.

It is worth remembering that Paraguay has already secured its participation in the next World Cup as one of the six host countries. This scenario will allow the coaching staff to work with a greater margin in incorporating new players and in developing a long-term playing identity.

In that search, Alfaro's presence at the South American Games also had a specific objective. "It was necessary to be here in Rosario observing the kids who may have a call-up in the future. Paraguay has good capabilities in its youth, but it still hasn't managed to have a balanced generation. We need to work so that everyone is in the same system and projecting long-term", he commented.

With the renewal already announced by the APF and the objectives defined by the coach himself, Alfaro thus begins a new phase of his cycle in Paraguay, this time with his sights set not only on maintaining what has been achieved but also on progressively preparing the team for the coming years.
