The future of José Mourinho continues to be a topic of discussion in European football. As rumors linking him to a possible return to Real Madrid grow, Benfica has reportedly decided to act quickly and has already presented him with a renewal offer to try to secure his continuity.

According to the Portuguese press, the president of the Lisbon club, Rui Costa, was the one who conveyed the proposal to the coach, who will make a decision in the coming days. Mourinho, who took over in September of last year with a contract until next season, has a clause in his contract that allows both the club and the coach to evaluate his continuity ten days after the league ends.

A few days ago, true to his style, the coach avoided premature definitions and made it clear when he would give a response. "I have had no contact with Real Madrid, I have not had it, and until the last league match against Estoril, I will not have it either. After that, there is a one-week period in which I will have the freedom to talk to whoever I deem appropriate," he recently stated.

Rui Costa would have brought the renewal closer to Mourinho.

The current sporting context of Benfica could also influence his decision. While the team remains unbeaten in the Portuguese championship, the 2-2 draw against Braga in the last round has relegated them to third place, complicating their aspirations to finish second, which would grant them a ticket to the qualifying rounds of the next Champions League, a spot currently held by Sporting Lisbon with 2 more points, a larger goal difference, and only one more match to play.

For now, Benfica has taken the lead with a concrete offer. However, the final decision will rest in Mourinho's hands, who will define his future once the season concludes.

Mou's numbers at Benfica

Since his arrival at the Lisbon club in mid-2025, The Special One has managed 54 matches, in which he achieved a record of 31 wins, 13 draws, and 10 losses, with a balance of 99 goals scored and 47 against.
