The historic Argentine forward recalled when he was the head coach of Al Ain and eliminated CR7's Al-Nassr.

Hernán Crespo shared an anecdote that was as awkward as it was funny involving Cristiano Ronaldo, which occurred after one of the most notable nights of his coaching career in the Middle East: when his Al Ain eliminated CR7's Al-Nassr in the Asian Champions League in March 2024. The Argentine coach recounted the episode on ESPN's F90 program and shared a quote from the Portuguese player that went viral for its mix of pride, anger, and competitiveness.

Crespo set the scene from the beginning: “It was the quarter-finals, we faced Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr. The first leg went well for us, we won 1-0. The thing is we advanced on penalties and, of course, all the admiration for a guy who has given and continues to give so much to football, you take your hat off to such an image”. This framework of respect is key to understanding what happened next, because Crespo approached not to provoke, but to congratulate.

The Argentine explained that after the elimination, he went to greet the Portuguese star, who was visibly upset by the defeat. And that’s where the central scene of the story unfolded. Crespo recounted it this way: “So, I went and he was angry. Logically, he was eliminated by us, and I went to hug him and said: ‘Thank you for everything you have given to football, what you give’. And he looked at me and said: ‘I haven't retired yet’”.

The series also had footballing elements that amplified the impact. In the decisive match, Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring with a penalty, although he also missed a clear chance during the game. However, Al-Nassr could not prevail in the penalty shootout: Marcelo Brozovic, Alex Telles, and Otávio all missed. Al Ain, on the other hand, was perfect in their three attempts, advanced to the next round, and ended up lifting the trophy after defeating Japan's Yokohama Marinos.

Paradoxically, the story between Crespo and Cristiano had a second part shortly after, also in the Emirates. The Argentine coach ended his stint at Al Ain in June 2024, after suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat against Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr. Later, Crespo began his second term at São Paulo in Brazil, where he ended his contract in March of this year. Currently, at 50 years old, the coach is without a club.

In Cristiano Ronaldo's case, the anecdote with Crespo coexists with a more complex sporting reality on a collective level. The Portuguese recently faced another disappointment with Al-Nassr after losing the AFC Champions League Two final, the second most important continental competition in Asia, after falling 1-0 to Japan's Gamba Osaka. The episode sparked additional controversy because the forward chose to skip the award ceremony.

The statistics add context to that frustration: since his arrival at the Saudi club, Al-Nassr has participated in 13 tournaments without a title and has already lost four finals with Ronaldo on the field. The last time CR7 lifted a club trophy was in 2021 when he won the Coppa Italia with Juventus. Since then, his individual performance has remained high, but without a corresponding team title: in 146 matches with the Saudi jersey, he scored 127 goals and provided 23 assists. During this period, his only championship celebration was with Portugal, winning the UEFA Nations League in 2025, maintaining a professional record of 33 titles among Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and the Portuguese national team.

In total statistical terms, Ronaldo has accumulated 971 goals and 261 assists in 1,321 matches played, a record that keeps him in the historical conversation of football's top scorers.
