The Argentine sport has added a new golden page in the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games. At the start of the official competitions in Senegal, Cecilia Dieleke climbed to the top of the podium in the 200-meter backstroke and achieved a historic medal for national swimming. At just 17 years old, the Buenos Aires native dominated the final from start to finish, set a new Argentine and South American record, and became the first Argentine swimmer to win gold in an Olympic competition.

The representative of the German Gymnastics Society of Villa Ballester (SAGVB) completed the event in 2:10.05 and outpaced her main rivals by more than five seconds. The Greek Eirini Zervou took the silver medal with a time of 2:15.52, while the Israeli Ofir Simcha completed the podium with 2:17.44.

Dieleke marked differences from the first meters. She passed the 50 meters in 30.60 seconds, reached the half of the race in 1:03.86, and arrived at the 150 with a split of 1:37.09. In the final stretch, she maintained the pace and touched the wall with a time that surpassed the Argentine and South American record of 2:10.36 by 31 hundredths, which belonged to Malena Santillán since August 11, 2025, and her personal best of 2:11.08 achieved on May 8 of this year.

The Argentine's performance was not a surprise. During the qualifiers, she had achieved the best time among all participants, with 2:13.73, and advanced to the final as one of the main contenders. Hours later, she confirmed her favoritism with a resounding victory that allowed her to open the golden medal count for the national delegation in Dakar.

"I am very well, very happy. This is what I came to seek. It is a dream come true", the swimmer expressed in a conversation with Olympics.com, after winning the title in the first of the four events she is registered for. On the other hand, she also dedicated her victory to the people who supported her during her sports growth: "Thank you very much to the Argentines for the support. I dedicate this victory to my coach, who supports me every day; to my family, who are the reason I am in sports; to my friends, who are the ones who support me when I am down and when I am well".

With an eye on the future, Dieleke did not hide one of her major goals: to represent Argentina in the senior Olympic Games. "I dream of going to Los Angeles. I hope it happens. And if it doesn't happen, it will be in 2032", she stated in reference to the next two editions of the Olympic event.

The achievement in Senegal represents another important step in the career of an athlete who has already demonstrated her potential in various international competitions. Before arriving in Dakar, she was chosen as the flag bearer for the Argentine delegation alongside gymnast Benjamín Fernández de Landa and had just concluded a remarkable participation in the 2026 South American Games in Santa Fe, where she won seven medals in as many events: three gold, three silver, and one bronze.

Now, with the gold medal in Dakar, Dieleke has secured a place in the history of Argentine swimming. Her achievement also represents the fourteenth gold medal for the country in the Youth Olympic Games, the first edition of which was held in Singapore in 2010.

Nevertheless, the competition is not over for the Buenos Aires native: she has three more events to compete in Senegal, with the possibility of continuing to expand a harvest that has already begun in the best way.
