Argentine rugby is going through hours of deep grief over the death of Juan Elmo Moyano, a historic former Los Pumas doctor and an emblematic figure of the national sport. The fateful incident occurred last Thursday in Punta del Este, after he was run over while he was walking along the Playa Mansa promenade.
According to the Maldonado Police Headquarters, the accident took place at around 10:55 at the intersection of the Claudia Williman promenade and Capricornio Street. Moyano, 78 years old and known in rugby circles as "El Mito", was walking when a car skidded, overturned, and struck him, leaving him trapped under the vehicle.
Personnel from the Mobile Police Response Unit (URPM II) and an emergency medical service worked at the scene to rescue him and rush him to a clinic in Maldonado. He was admitted with fractures in his hip and left arm, in addition to a cranial trauma with loss of consciousness. Despite medical efforts, he died hours later due to the severity of his injuries.
The authorities identified the driver as Horacio Guillot Navarro, 22 years old, who had 1.38 g/l of alcohol in his blood at the time of the accident. The criminal court judge of the 11th shift of Maldonado, Sylvana Karina García Noroya, charged him with manslaughter and ordered as a precautionary measure nighttime house arrest for 90 days, in addition to the prohibition on driving while the investigation moves forward.
