Hytale returns after years of uncertainty and will try to surpass one million players on its first day of early access

Hytale, the project that was born as a multiplayer expansion inspired by Minecraft, is going through its most decisive stage. The game, now managed once again by one of its co-founders, Simon Collins-Laflamme, is preparing for its early access launch on January 13. Expectations are enormous: the team aims to attract more than one million players from day one, a monumental challenge considering the title's complex history.
Hytale's development began in 2015 and quickly captured the attention of the gamer community because of its ambition: to combine sandbox elements, role-playing, creation tools, and a fully editable world. The interest caused financial backing from Riot Games, which in 2020 directly acquired Hypixel Studios. However, the succession of delays and internal changes left the project in prolonged limbo until its cancellation by Riot in 2025.
Far from being shelved, Hytale resurfaced months later when Collins-Laflamme regained its rights under pressure from a community that refused to abandon it. That return marked a complete reboot and a new direction: independent development and publishing outside traditional platforms.
Early Access with no frills: warnings, expected problems, and launch strategy

Unlike other massive launches, Hypixel Studios adopted an unusually transparent approach. Collins-Laflamme publicly warned that the game "is far from finished", describing it as an old, poorly organized version with evident bugs. The intention: to prepare players for a genuinely early access experience, not a polished one or anything resembling a final product.
To avoid a flood of early criticism—frequent on Steam— the studio chose to launch Hytale exclusively from its own launcher, compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux. This decision also seeks to distribute traffic before launch day, preventing overloads that could affect connectivity for the first players.
Platforms, future, and expectations from a giant community

For now, Hytale will only be available on PC, although the team plans to expand its reach to consoles later on. Its proposal of advanced customization, world creation, tools for modders, and role-playing game structure aims to capitalize on the huge fan base built over a decade.
For Hypixel Studios, this Early Access will function as a real test: if it manages to surpass one million players and maintain their interest, the next stage of development will be shaped directly by the community's response.
