According to a report by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), immigration accounted for almost 98% of the population growth in the United Kingdom during the past year.
In a context of strong growth in illegal immigration from Muslim and African countries, the country's population increased by more than three quarters of a million in the 12 months prior to June 2024, constituting the second largest annual increase in absolute terms since the late 1940s.
Estimates indicate that by mid-2024, the United Kingdom reached a record population of 69.3 million inhabitants, representing an increase of 755,254 people (1.1%) compared to the 68.5 million recorded in June 2023. Almost all of this growth was explained by international migration, while the natural balance, that is, the difference between births and deaths, had a much smaller impact.

During that period, it is estimated that 1,235,254 people immigrated to the country, while about 496,536 left, resulting in a net migration balance of 738,718 individuals. This number represented 97.8% of the total population increase.
Regarding the natural component, there was a slight predominance of births over deaths: 662,148 births compared to 645,909 deaths, which added only 16,239 people to the total population.
The 97.8% of population growth attributed to immigration was the second highest proportion recorded since the early 1980s, only below the 101.8% reached the previous year. Among the 361 municipalities in the United Kingdom, only two showed a negative migration balance: Lisburn and Castlereagh in Northern Ireland, and South Holland in Lincolnshire.

The total increase of 755,254 inhabitants represented the second highest annual population increase since at least 1949, the year when the ONS began compiling comparable data. The only period that surpassed it was between mid-2022 and mid-2023, when growth reached 890,049 people.
Consequently, it is estimated that the population in the United Kingdom expanded by 1.6 million people between June 2022 and June 2024, which constitutes the largest increase in a two-year period since official records began.
