In the midst of a tumultuous climate after a season without conquests and several internal conflicts, the president of the Real Madrid, Florentino Pérez, broke the silence. In a press conference, the executive addressed the rumors, dismissed his resignation, and announced elections in which he will seek re-election.
"I regret to tell you that I am not going to resign. I have requested that the electoral process for the board elections be initiated in which we will participate", he began. The leader explained that his decision responds to what he considers an offensive against him: "I do this because I have worked since 2000 to ensure that the owners of the club are the members. I made the decision because an absurd campaign has been created against the interests of Real Madrid and against me, taking advantage of the fact that we have had results that have not been the best, because you don’t always win".
Additionally, he strongly denied rumors about his health: "Some have told me that I have terminal cancer... I take this opportunity for those who have worried about me to know that I continue to preside over Real Madrid and my company, that my health is perfect, I couldn't be in both places if my health weren't perfect. If I had cancer as has been said, I would have to go to an oncology center, if I were, wouldn’t it have been reported everywhere in the world?".
The announcement comes after the defeat against Barcelona in LaLiga, which left the team without chances of adding a title this season. Nevertheless, Pérez defended his management with numbers: "I share the frustration, because this year we have not been able to win anything. But I have to tell you and show you that with me as president we have won 66 titles in football and basketball, including seven European Cups in football".
On the other hand, he also pointed out those who seek to challenge his power and challenged them: "They say there are people moving in the shadows to run. Well, let them run, this is the opportunity I give them. I am going to call for elections, this board of directors is going to present itself and I invite all those who want to run to take the opportunity to do so".
In another passage, Pérez directly targeted the media: "I have to come out to stop this. I cannot accept that there are people in the media who have taken over the situation. It has been less than two years since I won a League and a Champions, and now Madrid is in ruins and chaos. How can it be chaos?".
