The president Javier Milei held a bilateral meeting this Thursday with his Ecuadorian counterpart, Daniel Noboa, as part of a regional tour aimed at deepening political, commercial, and security ties among right-wing governments in Latin America.

The meeting took place at the Carondelet Palace, the seat of the Ecuadorian Government in Quito, where both leaders signed agreements aimed at strengthening the relationship between the two countries. Milei was accompanied by Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno and the Secretary General of the Presidency, Karina Milei.

The presidential agenda began with a floral offering at the Plaza de la Independencia and continued with the bilateral summit alongside Noboa.

Additionally, the Argentine president participated in activities related to commercial exchange with representatives of Argentine automotive chambers, while Foreign Minister Quirno attended the opening of the Economic Forum at the Swissôtel in Quito.

One of the main points of the meeting was related to security and the fight against organized crime. In this context, the Ecuadorian ambassador to Argentina, Diana Salazar, reported that both countries will move towards updating the existing extradition treaty, signed in 1933.

The diplomat explained that the current mechanism presents operational difficulties and that extradition processes have been “very cumbersome,” which is why she deemed it necessary to modernize the bilateral agreement to improve judicial cooperation between the two nations.

As part of this security agenda, the Argentine Government also announced the inclusion of the Ecuadorian criminal organization Chone Killers in the Public Registry of Persons and Entities Linked to Acts of Terrorism and Their Financing (RePET), under the Ministry of Justice.

According to the President's Office, the organization emerged in 2020 following a split from the gang Los Choneros and has consolidated as a structure linked to international drug trafficking, extortion, and contract killing, with connections to Mexican cartels involved in drug trafficking.

The decision was made in coordination between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Security, based on reports that determined the group “represents a real or potential external threat to national security,” according to the official statement.

Inclusion in the registry allows for the application of financial sanctions and operational restrictions against the criminal organization, in line with Milei's Government strategy to deepen international cooperation against drug trafficking and terrorism networks.

Milei's visit to Ecuador is part of a regional tour that began on July 25 and aims to consolidate ties with right-wing leaders.

After his stop in Ecuador, the presidential delegation will continue to Colombia, where Milei will participate in the inauguration ceremony of the elected president Abelardo de la Espriella. He will also hold diplomatic meetings there, including a meeting with Israel's Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa’ar.
