The Vice President of the United States, JD Vance, will travel to Argentina in November to hold a meeting with President Javier Milei, marking the first visit to the country by a U.S. official of that rank in nearly a decade.

Despite the confirmation of the trip, the exact date, the location of the meeting, and the topics that will be part of the agenda have yet to be defined.

The U.S. Vice President and Milei have already had an initial in-person contact. This occurred in October 2025, when the Argentine leader traveled to Washington for an official visit to the White House. There, he met with Donald Trump and greeted Vance, in the first face-to-face meeting between the two officials.

The most recent precedent of this type of visit occurred 9 years ago. In April 2017, then U.S. Vice President Mike Pence arrived in Argentina and was received by President Mauricio Macri at the Quinta de Olivos. Since then, no U.S. Vice President has returned to visit the country.

The alliance between Milei and Trump

Vance's trip will take place while the relationship between the Milei and Trump administrations is experiencing a period of strong political and economic alignment.

One of the central moments of that relationship occurred during 2025, when Argentina faced a scenario of significant financial tension due to political attacks and coup initiatives driven by the opposition in Congress, ahead of the legislative elections in October.

In this context, the Trump administration offered the Milei government a financial assistance package of USD 20 billion to help stabilize Argentina's exchange market.

The U.S. support came as the markets were undergoing a period of tension and the peso was under pressure. After the elections, La Libertad Avanza consolidated its position as the largest bloc in both chambers of Congress, ending the destabilizing attacks from the opposition.

The bilateral relationship also advanced in the commercial sphere. A month after the elections, Argentina and the United States signed a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement.

Subsequently, in March 2026, the U.S. Treasury announced a financing package of approximately USD 7 billion, aimed at infrastructure projects in Argentina and accelerating the export of raw materials, minerals, and energy to the Atlantic.

The rapprochement between both governments was again highlighted in September 2026, during the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York.

There, Milei participated alongside Trump in an extraordinary session of the Shield of the Americas, the security coalition promoted by the White House to coordinate regional policies against drug trafficking and organized crime.

During that meeting, Trump specifically referred to the electoral results achieved by his allies in the region and stated: “We had a great victory in Argentina, and not so long ago, twice”.

For Milei, the relationship with Washington constitutes one of the pillars of his foreign policy. In March 2026, during his opening speech at Congress, the Argentine president highlighted “the special relationship” with Trump and described the U.S. leader as “a key ally”.

He also emphasized the financial support received and stated: “We need to create the century of the Americas”. In the same speech, he added: “We are a natural link in the strategic value chain of the West”.

Vance's visit will thus fit into a relationship that during Milei's administration has deepened its political, financial, and commercial ties with the United States.
