Lies of P: Overture will receive a patch to reduce its difficulty following criticism

Director Jiwon Choi confirmed that Round8 will adjust the DLC experience following complaints about its high difficulty

South Korean studio Round8 announced that it will release a corrective patch for Lies of P: Overture, the new downloadable content for the successful soulslike. This decision is a direct response to community complaints, which considered the difficulty spike in the DLC excessive, especially for those who played it from New Game+ mode, where weapons and stats are inherited, but challenges are also increased.

The project director himself, Jiwon Choi, was the one who confirmed the measure and explained that the team "took note of the feedback" after the surprise launch of the DLC at Summer Game Fest. "We're committed to thoroughly reviewing the combat system and improving the experience without losing the challenging essence that defines the game," he stated.

Why did Overture's difficulty spark controversy?

Unlike the base game, Lies of P: Overture placed its new content right after chapter 9, which means that enemies and bosses present a significantly higher level of difficulty. For many, this broke the usual balance of the genre and turned the expansion into an almost insurmountable barrier, especially for new players or those returning to the story without having optimized their build.

"Some players enjoy the challenge, but many felt that progression became unfair," Choi acknowledged. On social media and specialized forums, several users pointed out that spending hours in the same section without advancing undermined the gaming experience.

Round8 listens to its community

The developer's response has been proactive. On other occasions, Round8 had already incorporated adjustable difficulty levels, a rarity within the soulslike genre. This time, the upcoming patch will seek to soften the scaling of damage and enemy aggressiveness, without removing the strategic component that characterizes the title.

The adjustments will also aim to improve performance and refine some attack patterns that, according to users, did not offer enough window to dodge or counterattack.

Comparisons with Elden Ring and other similar cases

What happened with Overture is reminiscent of situations experienced by other genre exponents, such as Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, where there were also questions about the lack of balance. The solution, in that case, came through a combination of patches and more flexible progression options.

Jiwon Choi reiterated that "each modification will be thoroughly tested before its implementation" and that, although there is no exact date for the patch, the priority is to restore balance without betraying the essence of the game.

A classic dilemma: accessibility vs. fidelity to the genre

The discussion opened by Lies of P: Overture exposes an old dilemma of soulslike games: how to attract new players without betraying the most demanding fans? Round8 is trying to find that middle ground with an approach that prioritizes balanced design, without falling into unnecessary frustration.

For some, lowering the difficulty is "betraying" the original spirit of the title. For others, it represents an evolution that allows them to enjoy the lore and atmosphere without getting stuck due to poorly calibrated difficulty spikes. What is certain is that the controversy has only increased interest in the franchise and the attention to its future decisions.
