Lionel Scaloni did not confirm Messi and anticipated several changes due to injuries.

The national team's head coach explained that he has not decided yet whether number 10 will start against Chile. Additionally, he justified the absences of Mac Allister and Lo Celso, and he will give minutes to new players

In the lead-up to Thursday's match against Chile, corresponding to the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, Lionel Scaloni gave his traditional press conference. The Argentina National Team coach spoke about the difficulties in assembling the team due to the large number of absences and left Lionel Messi's presence from the start in suspense.

"I was talking to him, we're still talking. We've been in contact recently. We haven't decided yet if he's going to start the match or not. It would be good to know how he is physically," Scaloni said. "It's clear that today we're in a position to try other things.  Initially, he's ready to play, then we'll assess. He's coming off a good match last Saturday. Initially, he's ready to play and we'll decide," he added.

Meanwhile, the formation of the team is affected by numerous absences, between suspensions and injuries, which forces the coach to make adjustments. "There will be many absences, especially in the midfield. I haven't confirmed the starting eleven because it will depend on training, but we'll give the opportunity to play to guys who haven't played much, it's the right time to play," he commented.

Regarding expectations for the match, the coach was clear: "The result is always important but today we believe it's not essential, we'll look for the players to fit in well and have the chance to get minutes with the National Team."

Scaloni explained Mac Allister's situation and other injuries

Regarding one of the most notable absences, Scaloni detailed: "Alexis(Mac Allister) was on the list, he's had some issues that have been ongoing over the past year and we decided with him that he should rest. Fortunately, we don't need to risk players and we decided he should get well for what's coming, that's why we drafted Barrenechea and Buendía."

He also spoke about another regular draft: "Lo Celso has also come with a problem and he surely won't be in either of the two matches, we need to get him back."

To conclude, Scaloni saw this context as a good opportunity for the young players: "These things have come at a time when they can be accepted because we don't need points, but it's an opportunity for the guys who get to play in their place. When there's an open door, you have to take advantage of it because you never know what will happen next.  Those guys will have the opportunity to play and show what they can do."
