Scaloni matched Bilardo and will break a historic record in the World Cup final

Lionel Scaloni continues to solidify his place among the great coaches in the history of the Argentine National Team. With the 2-1 victory against England in the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup, the coach reached 14 matches managed in World Cups, tying the record previously held by Carlos Salvador Bilardo. The final against Spain will be his 15th match and will leave him as the absolute leader of that statistic.

The record began to take shape in Qatar 2022, where Scaloni led the seven matches of the campaign that ended with Argentina as world champion. In the 2026 edition, the new format of 48 teams added a knockout round and allowed the finalist teams to play eight matches. The combination of both participations will bring the coach from Pujato to a figure that no other Argentine coach has reached.

Before facing England, Scaloni had reached 13 World Cup matches with the victory against Switzerland in the quarterfinals. That win allowed him to surpass the 12 matches of César Luis Menotti, who had managed the Albiceleste in Argentina 1978 and Spain 1982. The semifinal in Atlanta then represented the tie with Bilardo and ensured that the record would be broken in the last match of the tournament.

Scaloni tied Bilardo after the victory against England

For decades, Carlos Bilardo's mark seemed difficult to reach. The champion coach in Mexico 1986 managed seven matches in that competition and another seven in Italy 1990. His team reached two consecutive finals, winning the first against West Germany and losing the rematch four years later.

Bilardo's World Cup record consisted of eight wins, four draws, and two losses. The figure of 14 matches reflected not only longevity but also the difficulty of reaching the final stages in two consecutive editions. No subsequent Argentine coach had managed to play more than seven matches until Scaloni appeared.

The victory against England allowed the current coach to reach the same numerical height. Argentina had to come from behind in Atlanta and secured their place in the final thanks to goals from Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez. Beyond the qualification, the match added a new chapter to Scaloni's career and to the historical records of the National Team.

The definitive difference will come in the final against Spain. Scaloni will manage his 15th match in World Cups and will surpass Bilardo regardless of the outcome of the match. The record will be accompanied by two consecutive finals, something no Argentine coach has achieved since Narigón himself.

Menotti ranks third with 12 matches

The third place in the historical table belongs to César Luis Menotti. The champion coach in 1978 accumulated 12 World Cup matches: seven in the tournament held in Argentina and five in Spain 1982. His record was seven wins, one draw, and four losses.

Menotti had been surpassed by Scaloni in the quarterfinals against Switzerland. The 3-1 victory in extra time represented the current coach's 13th match and also ensured Argentina's presence in two more commitments. From that moment on, Scaloni knew he would finish the tournament above the two historical figures who led the country to its first world titles.

The comparison brings together three profoundly different cycles. Menotti is associated with the first world championship of 1978 and a proposal based on possession, talent, and offensive prominence. Bilardo symbolized the title of 1986, tactical adaptation, and a structure built around Diego Maradona.

Scaloni, on the other hand, developed a process that combined different tools. His team showed the ability to take the lead, regroup, change systems, and adapt to opponents with very different characteristics. This flexibility was one of the keys to conquering Qatar 2022 and reaching the final again four years later.

Sabella and Lorenzo, the next on the historical list

Further back are Alejandro Sabella and Juan Carlos Lorenzo, both with seven matches managed in World Cups. Sabella reached that figure during Brazil 2014, when he led Argentina to the final against Germany. The Albiceleste won their first five matches by a one-goal difference and eliminated the Netherlands on penalties in the semifinals.

The 2014 final ended without goals during the 90 minutes and was decided in extra time. Mario Götze scored the only goal of the match and prevented Sabella from completing his cycle with the world title. The coach left the position after the tournament and did not return to professional coaching.

Juan Carlos Lorenzo also accumulated seven matches between Chile 1962 and England 1966. In his first experience, Argentina was eliminated in the group stage, while four years later they reached the quarterfinals. The team lost 1-0 to England in a match marked by controversial refereeing and intense sporting tension.

The table shows the historical difficulty Argentine coaches have had in sustaining themselves for more than one World Cup. Many cycles ended after a single edition, even when the team had reached advanced stages. Scaloni broke that dynamic and built a project capable of remaining competitive over two consecutive tournaments.
