A terrorist group associated with Boko Haram carried out a cowardly terrorist attack in the northwest of the African country.

At least 20 people died and several more were kidnapped after an attack by armed men in northwestern Nigeria, in a new episode of violence that aggravates the security crisis in the African country. The incident occurred in the district of Shiroro, in the state of Niger, an area where both criminal gangs and dangerous jihadist groups operate

.

State police reported that the attackers broke into the villages of Bagna and Erena on Tuesday. According to the official version, three people, two community guards and a driver died, and others were injured during the confrontation with security forces. However, residents, health workers and local organizations raised the number of fatalities to at least 20, assuring that the aggressors acted for several hours

without being contained.

According to testimonies collected in the area, the armed men arrived on motorcycles and opened fire indiscriminately in the early hours of the morning, surprising the population. In addition to the murders, they set fire to houses and caused the displacement of numerous inhabitants, who fled to nearby towns such as Gwada

Zumba and Galadima Kogo.

The attack is framed in a context of growing insecurity in northern Nigeria, where Christians face recurrent violent incursions, kidnappings and destruction of communities. Several local sources attributed the offensive to a group known as Mahmuda, a splinter faction of Boko Haram that maintains ties to Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. Although there was no official demand, religious leaders indicated that the attackers did not distinguish between victims, murdering people

of different faiths.

The brutality of the attack has generated strong condemnation, as the aggressors allegedly shot at unarmed civilians, including families and farmers, in an act that shows the indiscriminate nature of the violence. In addition, the kidnapping of people remains a common practice of these groups, who use victims as a source of funding through ransoms

.

The episode in Shiroro is not an isolated one. According to reports from religious leaders and local organizations, more than 40 people have been killed in similar attacks in different villages in the northwest of the country in recent days, affecting at least nine communities in the states

of Niger and Kebbi.

Faced with this scenario, President Bola Tinubu has raised the need to reinforce security through the creation of state police forces in the 36 regions of the country. The initiative seeks to improve the capacity to respond to violence, although its implementation is still under debate.

Meanwhile, the Christian civilian population continues to be the main victim of a persistent conflict, in which armed groups continue to operate with high firepower and little containment, deepening a humanitarian crisis that is spreading in northern Nigeria.
