At least 20 people died and several more were kidnapped after an attack by armed men in northwestern Nigeria, in a new episode of violence that aggravates the security crisis in the African country. The incident occurred in the district of Shiroro, in the state of Niger, an area where both criminal gangs and dangerous jihadist groups operate
.State police reported that the attackers broke into the villages of Bagna and Erena on Tuesday. According to the official version, three people, two community guards and a driver died, and others were injured during the confrontation with security forces. However, residents, health workers and local organizations raised the number of fatalities to at least 20, assuring that the aggressors acted for several hours
without being contained.According to testimonies collected in the area, the armed men arrived on motorcycles and opened fire indiscriminately in the early hours of the morning, surprising the population. In addition to the murders, they set fire to houses and caused the displacement of numerous inhabitants, who fled to nearby towns such as Gwada
Zumba and Galadima Kogo.
The attack is framed in a context of growing insecurity in northern Nigeria, where Christians face recurrent violent incursions, kidnappings and destruction of communities. Several local sources attributed the offensive to a group known as Mahmuda, a splinter faction of Boko Haram that maintains ties to Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.
