The national public administration has experienced a significant reduction in the number of employees since the beginning of Javier Milei's government, reaching 17% fewer staff between December 2023 and October 2025.
This was revealed in a report prepared by economist Nadin Argañaraz, president of the Argentine Institute for Fiscal Analysis (IARAF), based on official data from Indec.
According to the survey, the state workforce went from 341,473 employees in December 2023 to 282,570 in October 2025, which meant a contraction of 58,903 positions.
“In October 2025, the workforce was 282,570 positions. Compared to the 341,473 in December 2023, there was a decrease of 58,903 positions”, Argañaraz specified in his report, where he described this adjustment as one of the most intense processes of public employment reduction in recent decades.

The economist also detailed the composition of the decrease: “Of the total decrease, the centralized administration accounted for 26%, the decentralized for 33%, and companies and corporations for 34%, among the most relevant. Every month there was a decrease compared to the previous month”. He pointed out that the Centralized Administration was the most affected in proportional terms, with 15,519 fewer positions from October 2023 to December 2025.
Staff cuts by agency
The reduction affected multiple agencies. Among those with the largest decreases were Correo Oficial, which reduced its staff by 5,114 employees; Operadora Ferroviaria, with 3,353 fewer; the former AFIP, later transformed into ARCA, with 3,112 cuts; and CONICET, which lost 1,958 employees. Other notable cases included Banco Nación (-1,951), Aerolíneas Argentinas (-1,914), AYSA (-1,677), and ANSES (-1,548).
The process even affected agencies that ceased to exist. Official data show that Desarrollo de Capital Humano Ferroviario S.A.C.P.E.M. went from having 1,073 employees to none. The same happened with the Instituto Nacional de Agricultura Familiar, Campesina e Indígena (INAFCEI), which previously had 1,028 employees.

Other entities that showed significant decreases were Télam (-793), INTI (-781), ENACOM (-750), INTA (-696), PAMI (-695), Vialidad Nacional (-672), the Argentine Army (-648), Casa de Moneda (-621), SENASA (-608), INCAA (-543), RENAPER (-508), and the National Disability Agency (-504). Agencies such as INAREPS (-429), INADI (-408), ENRE (-396), and ANMAC (-391) were also left without staff. The group called “Others” accumulated a decrease of 8,885 employees.
Although the adjustment was deep, official projections indicate that the decrease will not stop. For 2026, Milei's government plans to move forward with its chainsaw plan with a new cut that could reach another 10% of the total state workforce, driven by the expiration of contracts and the continuation of the spending reduction plan.
The measure would be implemented during the first two quarters of the year with the aim of increasing operational efficiency and maintaining the fiscal balance set by Milei's administration.
