Milei's government will prioritize Argentine doctors in access to residencies

The aim is to recognize the efforts of those who invest in Argentina and dedicate themselves to caring for other Argentinians

In an announcement made by presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni, the Government of Javier Milei officially announced a significant modification to the system for awarding medical residencies throughout the country.

From now on, professionals who have completed their entire education at Argentine universities will have priority over those who studied abroad, thus marking a substantial change in the policy for access to health training.

The measure, implemented by the Ministry of Health led by Mario Lugones, seeks to correct what the Executive described as a "distortion" in the current system, which until now did not take into account the differences between the standards of the Argentine educational system and those of other countries.

In Adorni's words, "the objective of this measure is to put an end to a scheme designed for foreign doctors and to the detriment of Argentine professionals".

Historically, medical residencies in Argentina were awarded through public competitions based on a score that combined the university degree average with the result of the Unified Residency Exam. However, no weightings were applied to recognize the particularities or demands of local training systems.

With this new provision, the merit order for accessing residencies will be calculated considering three components: the average obtained during the degree, half of the score obtained in the Unified Residency Exam, and an additional 5 points for those who have completed all their undergraduate studies at Argentine universities, whether public or private.

This bonus seeks to reward the effort of students who chose the national university system and prepared within the country to face the challenges of professional practice.

The Ministry of Health has already notified the health authorities of all provinces, urging them to immediately adhere to this reform in the selection process.

"It's time to put an end to distortions, to recognize the effort of those who choose Argentina and dedicate themselves to caring for other Argentines", Adorni concluded at a press conference, reaffirming Milei's Government's commitment to prioritizing national human resources.
