Argentine basketball is going through hours of deep grief. After suffering from a prolonged illness, Fabián Ricardo Borro, former president of the Argentine Basketball Confederation, died at 64 years of age. At the time of his death, the executive was president of FIBA Americas and was leading the club Obras Sanitarias, one of the most emblematic institutions in the National League.

The Argentine Basketball Confederation bid farewell to Borro with a public message in which it described him as "one of the most influential executives in the history of Argentine basketball". "During his administration, between 2019 and 2023, he left a deep mark based on the professionalization of structures, the modernization of management, institutional transparency, and a long-term strategic vision", stated the organization, which expressed its support for his family and for the entire sports community at this time.

Borro assumed the presidency of the CAB in a complex context and led a process of institutional reconstruction that aimed to organize administration, strengthen planning, and create solid foundations for the growth of basketball throughout the country. His administration was marked by the promotion of youth divisions, the improvement of infrastructure, and the ongoing training of coaches, referees, and executives.

His executive career covered every level of national basketball. Since the year 2000, he presided over Obras Sanitarias, where he promoted the modernization of the club and the development of youth players. He also led the Metropolitan Federation (Febamba) and played a central role in the Association of Clubs, first as vice president and then as president, being a key figure in the sporting and organizational consolidation of the National League.

One of the most notable pillars of his legacy was the promotion of professional women's basketball. Borro supported the creation and growth of the Women's League with the conviction that the development of the sport had to be inclusive and offer equal opportunities. He applied that same perspective to his work with the youth categories, which he considered the pillar of the future.

On the international stage, his career led him in 2023 to the presidency of FIBA Americas. From that position, he strengthened institutional ties and repositioned Argentine basketball within the continental landscape.

"Beyond his positions, Fabián Borro was a passionate executive, with an enormous vocation for work, a modern outlook, and an unshakable conviction about the role of basketball in building the future", highlighted the CAB in its official statement. His legacy is reflected in the structures that he helped consolidate and in a generation of long-term projects.
