#NiUnaMenos in Córdoba: feminists raised the Hamas flag, executioner of women

With the Palestinian flag, they marched against Milei and the IMF, forgetting that authoritarian Islamism subjugates women

In Córdoba, unprecedented scenes were witnessed as feminists marched against Milei's government, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the first #NiUnaMenos march. These were groups that have defended Islamic terrorism parading through the main avenues of the capital city, proudly raising the Palestinian flag.

Raising the Palestinian flag: contextual ignorance or implicit legitimization of Islamic terrorism?

The raising of these flags doesn't express support for Palestinian women fighting to free themselves from Islamic patriarchy and authoritarianism. Instead, implicit support is shown for a terrorist group (Hamas) whose leaders have been openly and historically misogynistic and oppressive toward women.

When a Palestinian flag is carried in a feminist march like "Ni Una Menos", explicit solidarity with oppressed Palestinian women is not being signaled. On the contrary, even if indirectly, support is being expressed for a nationalist cause. This cause, in its current form, is largely led by authoritarian and theocratic organizations like Hamas, especially in the Gaza Strip.

The contradiction of raising a Palestinian flag in a feminist march lies in uncritically adopting political symbols that represent governments and structures that directly harm women. All of this takes place in the context of a mobilization whose central focus is, supposedly, to combat that very violence.

During Tuesday's protests, a police cordon blocked the way in order to prevent the complete closure of the boulevard and thus facilitate vehicle circulation. This measure, adopted by the security forces, caused complaints from various leaders of organizations present at the march.

Who governs and what do they represent?

Hamas is a Palestinian, terrorist, and Islamic group that came to power in Gaza in 2007. This group governs under a strict interpretation of Islamic law (sharia). Its political and religious vision is not only openly hostile to democratic values, but also to women's rights, as understood by contemporary feminism.

In Palestine, women find themselves in a situation of total submission, where:

  • They can't move freely without the company of a man.
  • They are required to comply with strict dress codes, such as wearing the hijab or niqab.
  • Their word is worth less in court than that of a man.
  • They have very limited access to political or hierarchical positions, even within their own communities.
  • They do not have the right to decide on their reproductive health or marriage without male authorization.

In addition, other minorities defended by the feminist cause are also gravely threatened. For example, homosexual relationships are penalized, and LGBT+ women are persecuted or forced to flee.

That is, this is not simply a "religious" or "cultural" issue. It is a legal, institutional, and political structure of systematic oppression against women and sexual minorities. Meanwhile, this structure is promoted by the very "political actors" who dominate the current Palestinian scene: the terrorists.

To this, we must add the striking stance of these feminist groups that march against a government that, without a Ministry of Women, reduced the rate of female homicides. During 2024, the direct victims decreased by 8%compared to the last year of the former Kirchnerist president, who was prosecuted for beating his wife, Alberto Fernández.

Where does the Palestinian woman stand?

There are, of course, Palestinian women who fight for their rights, for gender equality, and who reject internal oppression. Many of them have been persecuted, silenced, or excluded both by Palestinian authorities and by the deeply patriarchal social environment in which they live.

Raising the Palestinian flag in a demonstration like "Ni Una Menos" doesn't make these women or their internal struggles against the authoritarianism of their own leaders visible. Instead, it renders their suffering invisible by equating the Palestinian cause with a single narrative of external oppression, omitting the internal patriarchy that punishes them daily.

One can't demand "not one less" while supporting, even symbolically, regimes that multiply abuses against all women. Feminist solidarity, if it truly exists and is genuine, must be critical and informed, not ideological and selective.
