The OAS supported Argentina in its claim to sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands.
This adds to the request from the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization to resume negotiations
The Organization of American States (OAS) expressed this Friday its unanimous and acclamatory support for Argentina's claim over the sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands, urging the United Kingdom to resume bilateral dialogue with Argentina to solve the dispute in the South Atlantic.
The resolution was celebrated by President Javier Milei, who contrasted the actions of his administration with what he described as "shoddy and cheap nationalism."
"By unanimity and acclamation, the OAS adopted a new declaration on the Question of the Malvinas Islands, reaffirming regional support for the call to resume bilateral negotiations between Argentina and the United Kingdom. We thank all of America for the unanimous support we've received. The Malvinas are Argentine," stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.

President Milei also reacted through his official account on the X network, responding to the Foreign Ministry's post: "THE MALVINAS ARE ARGENTINE. Instead of shoddy and cheap nationalism, we in the Government respond with clear actions and concrete results. VLLC!"
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein highlighted the importance of the month of June for Argentine diplomacy regarding the Malvinas issue: "A new resolution supporting Argentina's position in the United Nations Decolonization Committee was unanimously approved, and today, a new official declaration by acclamation in the OAS."
"We thank all the countries that supported us and highlight the work of the Argentine teams both at the United Nations and at the OAS. These advances reaffirm the Argentine Government's firm determination to move forward, with conviction and diplomacy, toward the full recovery of the exercise of sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia, South Sandwich, and the surrounding maritime areas," the minister concluded.

Another sign of support
In another sign of support, on June 18, the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization approved a new resolution related to the Question of the Malvinas Islands, reiterating the international body's request for Argentina and the United Kingdom to resume bilateral negotiations as soon as possible in order to reach a peaceful and definitive solution to the sovereignty conflict.
The resolution was adopted by consensus, with the joint support of all Latin American countries that are members of the Committee. According to the Argentine Government, this decision "once again reflects the solid support of the international community for Argentina's position."
During his intervention in the session, Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein reaffirmed "Argentina's unwavering commitment to the recovery of the full exercise of sovereignty." He also addressed various aspects of the dispute, including historical, legal, political, and diplomatic arguments.
Following this UN stance, in recent hours the resolution of the Organization of American States (OAS), which brings together all the nations of the continent, from the United States to Chile, was added. The Government of Javier Milei emphasized that the position adopted by the hemispheric body was "unanimous and by acclamation," which reinforces international support for Argentina's claim.
