It can also be used to develop animated storyboards and explore character movements before proceeding with a video production. Even a simple sketch can serve as a starting point for creating an animation.

The startup Town, which develops an artificial intelligence assistant for work, used Images 2.6 via the API to explore how animated characters can add personality to workplace interactions.

What new tools does the API incorporate

The update adds options for more precise control over image generation and editing:

  • Image marking: allows specific areas to be highlighted to indicate where changes should be made.

  • SVG export: facilitates the use of designs on websites, applications, and printed materials.

  • Complexity parameter: adjusts the level of planning required for a request. Low values favor quick edits, while medium or high values are aimed at scenes with more elements or constraints.

  • Quality control: allows for adjusting the level of detail and visual fidelity.

OpenAI recommends using low complexity for most editing tasks, combined with the quality level required for each project.

Availability of Images 2.6

Images 2.6 is available globally in ChatGPT and Codex, at all subscription levels and from computers, mobile devices, and the web. The GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and Sunburst variants are also available through the API.

OpenAI launched Images 2.6, a new version of its image generation technology available in ChatGPT, Codex, and the API. Among its main features are the ability to create GIFs, improve visual consistency during edits, and adjust results with greater precision.

The update also introduces tools aimed at developers, such as controls over scene complexity and SVG exports. The company noted that 4 billion images are currently generated per week.

Images 2.6 allows for faster image generation

One of the main changes is the generation speed. Images 2.6 produces images 50% faster than the previous version, according to OpenAI.

In the API, the model is available in two variants:

  • GPT-Image-2.6 Flare: is geared towards rapid generation. With quality set to low, it can produce images in approximately six seconds. It also incorporates improvements in poster composition, product images, and other professional visual content.

  • GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst: targets work that requires greater detail and precision. With medium or high quality, it offers higher quality image generation and more consistency across different edits.

The new version aims to facilitate successive modifications without losing important elements of an image, such as characters, products, or brand details.
