OpenAI published a statement about its historic agreement with the Argentine company Sur Energy to advance the construction of a mega artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Patagonia, in one of the largest technological investments in the country's history.
The project, called Stargate Argentina, is part of the Incentive Regime for Large Investments (RIGI) and involves a total investment that could reach 25 billion dollars, with a first stage valued between 7 and 10 billion.
In its statement, OpenAI emphasized that "Argentina has great potential to host the first Stargate project in Latin America. This landmark infrastructure initiative would help position the country as a regional and global leader in artificial intelligence, driving economic growth and expanding opportunities throughout the country."

The statement highlights that the project will be led by Sur Energy, following discussions held in Buenos Aires between President Javier Milei, government officials, and an OpenAI delegation led by Chris Lehane, the company's Director of Global Affairs. Both parties signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to explore the development of the large-scale data center.
"Sur Energy will be the energy and infrastructure developer and will lead the formation of a consortium, which includes collaboration with a cloud infrastructure developer," the document states. In addition, the Argentine firm "plans to ensure that the data center ecosystem is powered by secure and efficient sources."
The statement also highlights the growth of the local technology ecosystem: "Argentina is entering the AI era with great momentum. Millions of Argentines use ChatGPT every week, and its adoption has more than tripled in the past year... This momentum, combined with a growing developer ecosystem, makes Argentina the ideal place to build the infrastructure that will unlock all its AI potential."

In addition to the construction of the data center, OpenAI announced that it is working with Milei's government "to promote the adoption of AI throughout the country, as part of our OpenAI for Countries initiative," with the goal of having tools like ChatGPT help optimize daily work, save costs, and provide better services to Argentine citizens.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted the strategic relevance of the agreement: "This milestone goes beyond infrastructure; it's about making AI accessible to more people in Argentina. We're excited to work with Argentina on its path to becoming an AI hub for all of Latin America. President Milei's vision of how AI can drive Argentina's growth and creativity is unequivocal and strong. Stargate Argentina will help make that vision a reality."
Meanwhile, Emiliano Kargieman, partner at Sur Energy, stated that the project "represents a historic opportunity for the country. It combines our unique potential in renewable energy with the development of critical infrastructure for artificial intelligence on a global scale."
He also emphasized that the alliance "makes Argentina a relevant player in the new global digital and energy landscape, creating quality jobs, attracting international investment, and showing that innovation and energy can be complementary drivers of sustainable development."
