Overwatch 2 crosses with Street Fighter 6: skins, challenges, and controversy over prices

Blizzard's shooter's first external collaboration generates excitement, but also criticism

The anticipated alliance between Overwatch 2 and Street Fighter 6 marks a historic moment for the universe of Blizzard Entertainment's shooter. For the first time, the game opens its doors to an external franchise, and it does so with Capcom, one of the most influential companies in the history of fighting video games.

The event, which takes place between May 20 and June 2,  includes themed skins, challenges, exclusive rewards, and the opportunity to see Overwatch heroes embody legends of the fighting game.

The community received the initiative with enthusiasm, although the monetization model once again sparked criticisms that are already common whenever cosmetics are launched in the official store.

The crossover presents eight exclusive skins, highlighting reinterpretations such as Hanzo transformed into Ryu, Zenyatta as Dhalsim, and Juno embodying Chun-Li. In addition to the appearance, the characters incorporate iconic moves like the Hadouken or the Yoga Flame, which respect the original spirit of Street Fighter without altering the base game's mechanics.

Also added are sprays, voice lines, and themed titles that players can unlock by participating in the event's daily challenges. As an incentive, Blizzard included up to 40,000 experience points for the Battle Pass, accessible just by playing matches during the crossover's duration.

Expensive bundles and community complaints

Enthusiasm for the new aspects was overshadowed by the controversy surrounding the prices. The main skins are available in the store through paid bundles, instead of being unlocked through achievements or challenges. The most complete bundle, the "Ultra Bundle," includes the eight skins and special accessories. There are also individual bundles like the "Mega Bundle" that group specific characters.

Although the prices have not been officially confirmed,  they are expected to range between 2800 and 10,000 Overwatch Coins, following the trend of previous events. On social media and specialized forums, players expressed their dissatisfaction, considering that a collaboration of this magnitude deserved more accessible rewards for everyone.

A model to follow or a missed opportunity?

Beyond the complaints, the event represents a bold step in the evolution of Overwatch 2, which until now had remained closed to other franchises. For many, this type of alliance has high cultural value and allows for renewed interest in the game. The quality of the designs and the fidelity to Capcom's characters were widely praised.

The outcome of the event could set the course for future collaborations. Everything will depend on how Blizzard reacts to the criticisms and whether it adjusts the reward system to balance loyalty and monetization.
