Prince William breaks rules set by the Queen to win over young people

The Prince of Wales aims to become a king closer to the new generations before assuming as king

Prince William, heir to the British throne, began to distance himself from some of the rules established by his grandmother, Elizabeth II. In particular, he challenged one of the most well-known unofficial norms of the monarchy: the avoidance of photos with admirers. This change reflects a more modern approach and a closer connection to the new generations, something that had been kept in the background during Elizabeth II's reign.

For many years, the British royal family followed an unwritten rule that discouraged photos with followers.  This practice was rigidly maintained until the end of Elizabeth II's reign, as the sovereign considered it essential to maintain a certain distance between the royal family and the public.  However, social dynamics have changed, and the new generation of monarchs seems willing to adapt to modern times.

A closer approach: William ambassador of modernity

As Prince Charles III  assumed the throne,  William has begun to take a more visible and active role within the royal family. He not only assumed greater responsibilities but also began to soften some of the norms imposed in the past, including those related to selfies. Although there was never an official rule about this type of photos, during Elizabeth II's reign the practice was strongly rejected. Today, the Prince of Wales has decided to embrace a more modern image connected with society.

William showed his affinity with social media and new forms of interaction, becoming an advocate for direct and accessible communication with his followers. Through selfies, videos on  TikTok  and other platforms, the prince began to connect with the younger generation, becoming a symbol of change within the monarchy.

Royal expert  Emily Ferguson  highlights William's enthusiasm for interacting with the public, especially during his international trips, such as the one to Estonia, where he was receptive to selfie requests, even taking people's phones to take the photos himself.

Attracting Generation Z: a challenge for the Royal Family

William's change in attitude responds to a clear objective: to get closer to Generation Z. This new generation, which grew up in the digital age, is less likely to be interested in the British royal family. Young people are more attracted to public figures who connect with them through digital platforms and maintain more direct communication. In this sense, William has shown awareness of the new social realities, using his presence on social media as a means to bridge the gap between the monarchy and the new generations.

The prince, at 42 years old, seems to have understood the demands of the digital age and, by putting an end to the unofficial rule about selfies, takes a decisive step to get closer to this younger audience. This trend also reflects a new narrative in the British monarchy, one that adapts to the expectations of a changing and more connected society. With his relaxed attitude and presence on digital platforms, William seeks to renew the image of the royal family, aligning with the interests and values of contemporary youth.
