The Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, highlighted the importance of the achievement “Today we speak of the culmination of an extremely demanding restoration intervention, thanks to which the west pediment of the Parthenon is shown in its most complete form in about 220 years,” she expressed. She added that “the view is truly impressive”
The Parthenon, dedicated to Athena in the 5th century BC, is one of the most emblematic symbols of ancient Greece. Throughout its history, it has served various roles: it functioned as a treasury, a Christian church, and a mosque. In the 17th century, it suffered severe damage from an explosion
History of interventions and challenges
Many of its sculptures were taken from Greece during the 19th century Restoration efforts in the 20th and 21st centuries focused on repairing accumulated damage, including that caused by previous restorations. This latest project on the western facade represents a significant advancement in those efforts
