Ridley Scott, at 87 years old, isn't thinking about slowing down. Following the commercial success of Gladiator II, the director confirmed in an interview with The Guardian that he's already moving forward with the third installment.
The film will once again feature Paul Mescal in the role of Lucius Verus, who was positioned as the protagonist at the end of the second movie. The story is set to expand with shades of tragedy and power in the style of The Godfather.

A success that propelled the new installment
Gladiator II didn't convince all critics, but its numbers were compelling: it grossed 464 million dollars worldwide, according to The Guardian. Added to that was the enormous performance in streaming and Blu-ray sales, which ultimately justified the saga's return.
Scott's vision for Gladiator 3
The director stated that he's aiming to turn the story into a trilogy. He explained that this third part will explore a dilemma similar to Michael Corleone's in The Godfather: a man who inherits a power he never wanted. In this case, that man will be Lucius Verus.
Mescal will face the challenge of showing how the young man, forced by fate, transforms into emperor of Rome. This arc connects directly with what happened in real history, providing a solid historical framework for the plot.

Upcoming projects on Scott's agenda
Although the director indicated that Gladiator 3 is his immediate project, he also left the door open to other works. Among them, a new Alien prequel, a Bee Gees biopic, and the adaptation of The Dog Stars, a novel by Peter Heller.
