River and Gallardo set two new records after the victory against Universitario
El Millonario became the first team to win 200 matches in the Libertadores, and Gallardo became the second coach with the most appearances in the competition
River won by the minimum against Universitario at the Monumental in Lima, a place that didn't bring good memories for the Millonario due to the last final lost against Flamengo, and secured three key points at the start of the 2025 Libertadores. Although the team showed a slight improvement in its performance and functioning, the club from Núñez still has much to improve. Beyond this, those led by the Muñeco reached two impressive milestones.
Starting with the coach, Marcelo Gallardo reached 104 matches managed in the top South American competition: 98 at the helm of River and 6 with Nacional of Uruguay. With this milestone, he equaled the record of Luis Cubilla, who until now held the second place in terms of appearances.

The first place, at least for now, belongs to Gabriel Ocho Uribe, with a total of 115 matches managed. The coach born in Merlo has the chance to reach and even surpass him in this same edition of the tournament. For this, River must reach at least the semifinals. If they manage to advance to the final, Gallardo will take the first place.
As for the club, River became the first to reach 200 victories in the history of the Libertadores. Nacional follows with 181 wins, while Peñarol is third with 174. Both Uruguayan teams were further relegated after the first matchday of the group stage, as they suffered defeats. El Bolso fell categorically to Atlético Nacional in Medellín by 3-0, while the Carbonero lost agonizingly 2-1 against Vélez at the Amalfitani. Boca, which is approaching the podium, appears in fourth position with 170 victories, but for the second consecutive year, it won't add wins.

Throughout its participation in this prestigious competition, River has played 403 matches and scored a total of 666 goals, making it the highest-scoring team in the history of the tournament. In terms of titles, the Millonario has lifted the cup on four occasions (1986, 1996, 2015, and 2018), placing it in the fourth position of the historical table shared with Estudiantes de La Plata. Third is Nacional with 5, second Boca with 6, and first Independiente with 7.
