The English football world was shaken by an unprecedented decision. The English Football League (EFL) expelled Southampton from the playoff final for promotion to the Premier League after confirming a case of tactical spying against Middlesbrough in the lead-up to the Championship semifinal.
The sanction was officially announced on Tuesday following a investigation prompted by a complaint from Middlesbrough, which accused "Soton" of sending a member of their coaching staff to illegally scout a closed training session of the team days before the decisive series.
According to reports in British media, the incident occurred at the Rockliffe Hall training ground, where "Boro" trains. There, a Southampton analyst was detected while observing and recording the tactical session from a nearby area of the complex. When a member of the rival staff attempted to identify him, the man refused and quickly left the area. As hours passed, the image went viral and the individual was identified as William Salt, a member of the analysis team of coach Tonda Eckert.

While the investigation was ongoing, the semifinal was still played. After a 0-0 draw in the first leg, Southampton managed to win 2-1 in extra time of the second leg and secured a place in the final. However, the disciplinary ruling completely changed the scenario.
"An independent disciplinary commission has expelled Southampton from the playoffs today after the club admitted multiple violations of EFL regulations related to unauthorized recording of another club's training", stated the official statement released by the EFL.
In addition to being excluded from the promotion final, the club received another severe penalty: they will start the next Championship season with a four-point deduction. Thus, the EFL deemed that the violations committed undermined the principles of fair play and transparency of the competition, leading to the decision to impose an exemplary punishment.
Following the ruling, Middlesbrough, which had continued training while awaiting the decision, was automatically reinstated into the playoff and will take the vacant spot in the final against Hull City, which had eliminated Millwall in the other semifinal. The decisive match for the third promotion to the Premier League will be played on Saturday May 23 at Wembley Stadium in London, with the time still to be confirmed.
