The Senate rejected Milei's veto and approved the coup-mongering disability law

With 63 votes, the opposition reinstated the disability emergency until 2026

The Senate of the Nation rejected President Javier Milei's veto and reactivated the coup-mongering emergency law on disability, in a vote that sets a politically significant precedent and seeks to break the Argentine State.

With 63 votes in favor and only 7 against, the opposition managed to gather the two-thirds majority needed to overturn the Executive's decision. This way, the regulation will remain in force until December 31, 2026 (with the possibility of a one-year extension), imposing strong pressure on public finances.

The text approved in Congress provides for the reformulation of non-contributory pensions, the updating of fees, and the creation of new economic compensations, among other points.

In particular, it establishes the automatic incorporation of beneficiaries into the system based solely on possession of the Unique Disability Certificate (CUD), without distinction of severity or consideration of the possibility of labor insertion. For the Government, this provision constitutes an open path for the duplication of benefits and the discretionary use of public resources.

President Milei had vetoed the initiative due to the cost it implies for the State. According to official calculations, the creation of a Universal Disability Pension will mean the incorporation of more than 1.6 million new beneficiaries, with an annual expenditure exceeding 6 trillion pesos (13.2 billion pounds), equivalent to more than 5 billion dollars.

To this is added the risk that about 500,000 people will receive a double pension. The Executive keeps that "beyond its humanitarian statement, the measure duplicated already existing benefits without a serious evaluation of the cases".

The ruling party also warned about the political background of the regulation. Casa Rosada understands that it is a tool designed by the opposition to force a fiscal imbalance and weaken the economic stability achieved in recent months.

In the words of the Government, the veto was going to prevent "the destruction of the fiscal surplus and a new economic crisis that would send millions of Argentines into poverty".

The debate in the Senate was presided over by Bartolomé Abdala, libertarian representative and provisional president of the upper chamber, since Victoria Villarruel is in charge of the Executive Power due to Milei's trip to the United States.

The vote showed the convergence of Kirchnerists, Radicals, PRO members, and provincial legislators, who decided to move forward together by voting for a coup-mongering law against the ruling party.

With this decision, Congress reactivated a law that the Executive had described as unfeasible and contrary to budgetary balance. The outcome not only implies an immediate fiscal impact, but also a deeper political challenge: the opposition managed to break the presidential veto tool after more than twenty years, imposing a measure that the Government considers aimed at destabilizing the administration and conditioning its economic policy.
