From Seville to New York with a stopover in Argentina: Máxima and Guillermo's traveling life
Whether for pleasure or official commitments, the kings of the Netherlands lead a life of constant travel
The kings Willem-Alexander and Máxima of the Netherlands have made travel a constant in their lives, whether for official commitments or pleasure. Their schedule has taken them around the world, with special attention to Argentina, the queen's native country.
Queen Máxima maintains an unbreakable bond with Argentina.Last Christmas, the royal family spent it in Patagonia, a region they frequently visit and where her brother, Martín Zorreguieta, resides. On that trip, they also made a stop in Buenos Aires to visit the queen's mother. Then they headed to San Carlos de Bariloche, where they own Estancia Pilpilcura, one of their recreational residences.
From Argentina to Spain: the bond with Máxima's homeland
Before traveling to Argentina, the kings visited Madrid, a city that is part of their usual destinations. There, their daughter, Princess Amalia, lived for a year for security reasons. The couple's relationship with Spain is close, as in Seville they lived their love story at the April Fair in 1999 and, in 2019, they celebrated their 20th anniversary there. Additionally, in recent years they have visited Andalusia and participated in hunts in Ciudad Real.

Greece and the controversies
In 2009, Willem-Alexander and Máxima attended the wedding of Prince Nikolaos of Greece and Tatiana Blatnik, marking the beginning of their fondness for that country. In 2012, they acquired a property in Doroufi, near Kranidi, where they spent numerous seasons. However, this residence has been the subject of controversy, especially during the pandemic, when their stay caused criticism due to travel restrictions imposed in the Netherlands.
State visits and official commitments
Since their ascension to the throne in 2013, the kings have made 24 state visits, surpassing other European royal houses in diplomatic activity. They toured East Asia, highlighting their visit to Indonesia in 2020, where they followed the legacy of the Dutch East India Company.

In the Americas, Queen Máxima is a frequent presence in New York for her role as Special Advocate for the UN Secretary-General for Financial Health. On her last visit, she inaugurated an exhibition on Anne Frank at the Jewish Museum. For Máxima, the city holds sentimental value, as she worked there in the financial sector when she met Willem-Alexander.
The Antilles and other journeys
Within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the monarchs regularly visit the Antilles, where Aruba and Curaçao remain under the Dutch crown. In 2023, they toured with their daughter Amalia, consolidating the royal family's presence in the Caribbean.
In addition to their institutional commitments, the kings have been regular attendees at royal and aristocratic weddings. In 2023, they participated in the wedding of the Duchess of Medinaceli in Jerez and, in December, Willem-Alexander traveled with his daughters Amalia and Alexia to Madrid for the wedding of a member of the Baumbach family.
From Argentina to Japan, through Spain and Greece, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands turn each destination into part of their story, reaffirming their role as true globetrotters of royalty.
