Stranger Things is preparing an international spin-off about the Upside Down
The new proposal would abandon the classic characters and explore secret laboratories around the world
Although the ending of Stranger Things hasn't aired yet, rumors are already circulating about how the universe created by the Duffer brothers could continue.
In a recent interview, Finn Wolfhard, one of the main actors in the series, revealed that there is a concrete idea for a spin-off that would radically change the known approach so far: without Hawkins, without the original characters, and with a narrative closer to the style of Twin Peaks.
A new international and atmospheric approach for the Stranger Things universe
The main difference of this possible spin-off would be its setting: it would no longer take place in Hawkins, but in multiple international locations. The concept revolves around the expansion of the Upside Down mythology, focusing on new secret laboratories distributed around the world, beyond the one that originated the story in the fictional Indiana town.

Wolfhard surprised the production team by accurately anticipating the central idea of the spin-off. "If there was a laboratory in Hawkins and another in Russia, how many more could exist?" the actor commented, suggesting that there are more doors open to the Upside Down. Ross Duffer, co-creator of the series, acknowledged that Wolfhard was the only person who managed to guess the concept of the new project.
An anthology narrative in the style of Twin Peaks
The new approach would adopt an anthology structure, where each episode or season would present a different story, but unified by the presence of the Upside Down. The inspiration from Twin Peaks would be reflected not only in the narrative style, but also in the atmosphere filled with mystery and symbolism, elements that defined David Lynch's series.
Wolfhard explained that the tone would be more experimental, breaking with the traditional formulas of Stranger Things but maintaining the supernatural essence that captivated millions. This new narrative would allow for the exploration of broader themes and diverse genres, appealing both to nostalgia and to new audiences.
Early development and future projection
Meanwhile, nothing has been officially confirmed by Netflix. The spin-off is a possibility under consideration, and its development would depend on the reception of the main series finale and the platform's strategic decisions.

Even so, the franchise is already showing signs of expansion, such as an animated series in development, also set in the Stranger Things universe.
The ending of Stranger Things: dates and expectations
The ending of the original series is scheduled for late 2025 and will be released in three parts:
- November 26: the first 4 episodes.
- December 25: another 3 episodes.
- December 31: the final episode.
This conclusion will mark a turning point for the franchise. While some fans celebrate the idea of expanding the universe, others fear that losing the iconic characters and the Hawkins setting could weaken the essence that turned Stranger Things into a global phenomenon.
